24 comments so far (post your own)Recently visited the Hall and loved it but was baffled at the omission of several artists/groups especially Don McClean. "American Pie" is one of the most scoping and visionary songs in rock history, and "Vincent" ain't too shabby either. To call him a one-hit wonder is short-sighted. I believe he is way overdue for induction. Posted by Trudie on Saturday, 01/19/2013 @ 19:57pm |
I love don mclean and all his works, not just American Pie. Given that the rock and roll hall of fame is no longer inducting legends like the beatles and the stones (already in) I think Mr Mclean and Stevie Ray Vaughn deserve consideration. Posted by Caleb Barsch on Sunday, 01/20/2013 @ 21:18pm |
If Don McLean is not considered prolific enough for the Hall, American Pie should be. Few songs have its staying power. I retired from teaching in 2014. Throughout, my students showed that they knew and loved the song. Posted by Scott Clare on Tuesday, 07/24/2018 @ 13:52pm |
Don McLean does not meet the criteria for nom. or induction to HOF. Posted by Mark on Tuesday, 07/24/2018 @ 19:07pm |
I honestly expect him to get in through the singles category with "American Pie" within the next few years. Great musician, but nobody really knows anything but other than the previously mentioned song. Posted by Jason Dagotto on Monday, 11/26/2018 @ 22:08pm |
American Pie, Vincent and Elvis fave And I Love You So. All of that is far and away better than Abba and Dave Clark 5 put together. Posted by Judy on Tuesday, 12/10/2019 @ 19:36pm |
American Pie is one of the greatest rock songs ever made. Also, he isn't a one-hit-wonder. His song 'Vincent' has 3 million airplay. American Pie has 5 million. Posted by Random Dood on Wednesday, 04/15/2020 @ 10:41am |
I've never heard this song Vincent, and I'm sure no one else has, as it never gets played anymore... Posted by Mr. XFL on Wednesday, 04/15/2020 @ 18:12pm |
Have never heard 'Vincent'. Do think the first American Pie movie was pretty funny. Posted by Paul in KY on Thursday, 04/16/2020 @ 08:26am |
If you haven't yet, give Vincent a listen. Its a fantastic song. Posted by Steve Z on Thursday, 04/16/2020 @ 09:34am |
Listened to 'Vincent' last night. Had been thinking (before I heard song), why I didn't have it on my iPod if it was so good, etc. Do have 'American Pie'. Cheesy song, but from my youth & Don does have a fine singing voice. Posted by Paul in KY on Friday, 04/17/2020 @ 08:13am |
His songs are so well written, like pieces of heaven. Just because he had disdain for commercial success should not keep him from receiving the recognition that he deserves. Posted by Macel Leria on Friday, 10/23/2020 @ 14:06pm |
I have had the priveledge of seeing Don Mclean in concert a few times Posted by Mark on Saturday, 03/20/2021 @ 09:10am |
there's no American pie that being recognized if don McLean didn't exist he deserves to be in RHOF and American pie is the best ticket for that Posted by Allan feria on Tuesday, 03/23/2021 @ 13:04pm |
It's ONE song, and an incredibly overrated/unbearable one at that... Posted by Mr. XFL on Tuesday, 03/23/2021 @ 14:42pm |
I'm not a Hall watcher, I'm just an annoying ass whiner who cries like a drama queen. Me so wimpy. Posted by Mr. XFL on Tuesday, 03/23/2021 @ 15:01pm |
How on God's green earth can Don McLean NOT be in the Rock and Roll HoF? Was anyone who listened to rock music in the 70s, 80s, 90, 00s … unaware of Don's talent and artistry? How many other rock icons have cited him as a key influence? Give me an effing break. Madonna is in the RnR HoF and he's not? For what, Like a Virgin? It shouldn't work this way. Nothing should work this way. Posted by Kevin D on Friday, 07/9/2021 @ 20:09pm |
Uh, Kevin, she does have Material Girl & Papa Don't Preach. Both better than Don's song. Posted by Paul in KY on Saturday, 07/10/2021 @ 11:21am |
Don McLean sang "American Pie." Was that his only hit? Posted by Brian Schonour on Tuesday, 11/9/2021 @ 17:36pm |
I'm not the biggest fan of Don McLean however, American Pie is one of the most iconic American songs ever… throw in Vincent and he should be an automatic inductee.. poet, rock star, singer-songwriter!!! Posted by Mark Del Priore on Tuesday, 01/4/2022 @ 17:47pm |
Even if Don McClean was a one hit wonder, which he is definitely not.... American Pie is one of the most classic and well written songs of all time...at that song alone should get him into the Hall Of Fame... Don't forget Vincent, Castles in the Air, etc Posted by Barry Hammons on Thursday, 12/22/2022 @ 18:36pm |
American Pie and Vincent are 2 of my favorite songs ever written, and the whole American pie album is awesome. However I only know that album and a few other hits. A lot of people might see him as only American pie and maybe Vincent and pass on him, which is very unfortunate but there's also a backlog of singer songwriters and I'd find Warren Zevon Jim Croce Harry Chapin Jimmy Buffet and Gordon Lightfoot more worthy of induction Posted by Will M on Tuesday, 01/10/2023 @ 17:05pm |
First, Don Mclean is a song writing legend. American Pie is a tribute to all who went down on Buddy Holly's plane and the times, Vincent is a beautiful tribute to Vincent Van Gogh and was one of Tupacs favorite songs...few songs are as well known to Americans as these Posted by Anna C on Wednesday, 01/18/2023 @ 08:17am |
Del Shannon and Percy Sledge aside, one-hit wonders don't (and shouldn't) make any HoF… Posted by EDS on Wednesday, 01/18/2023 @ 08:52am |
