I agree his output is too late to be an Early Influencer (as it's currently defined) - but he will eventually get in as the Rock Hall catches up to cover later "influencers." Posted by Greg Dean on Thursday, 02/7/2019 @ 19:41pm |
Donegan should be in the HOF. He represents skiffle music in the 1950's and heavily influenced John Lennon and Paul McCartney in terms of songwriting. The Beatles cited him often. And also David Letterman confuses Jimmy Fallon with Lonnie Donegan which is hilarious. Posted by Dave Teves on Saturday, 07/6/2019 @ 06:47am |
lonnie's earliest pro., recordings are in fact from 1951/52 his first hit was actually recorded in 1954 'rock island line' i believe he had over 20 chart entries in around 5 years lonnie was very much an influence on the popular music scene in the u.k. in the mid 50s he was the man that started the classic line up of upright bass electric lead guitar drums and second guitar in the U,K. he kick started the sale of guitars in the UK. and they sold thousands of them because of 'lonnie' almost every street had a skiffle group because of lonnie his live performances were wild and frantic and bordering on 'rock 'n' roll he was the man that gave young people in the u,k, there own music! you can easily get 2 cds with around 30 tracks on each cd of 'great' lonnie songs and another cd of live stuff , there are so many british musicians out there that have cited lonnie as being there main influence i no lots of people including myself that say lonnie is the only good british artist ever ! Forget about that "skiffle" nonsense. He may have called it skiffle, but skiffle isn't played with electric guitar, stand-up base, and a drum kit. Listening to a sample of Lonnie Donegan's hits clearly shows that he was playing rock and roll, even if his repertoire consisted of American folk songs (folk rock, anyone?) In other words, he invented rock and roll in the British Islands, and kept his position at the top of the charts throughout 1956-1962. Posted by Michael on Thursday, 09/23/2021 @ 07:45am |
