You nailed it Martin. Green Day, Nirvana and NIN. NIN shouldn't be recognized. A few great minor moments does not a legacy make. Pavement should be in before any of those three, but won't make the ballot.

I would definitely argue for Slint. Mother Love Bone won't get in, but as long as Pearl Jam does, that'll be fine with me. I just prefer ol' Andy Wood.

Yeah, that is real surprising that you pick the band that is "underground." You are so predictable....
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, 06.14.07 @ 00:18am
Maybe you just got internet under your rock, but if you haven't been keeping track, there's been more than a decade-long increase in the number and popularity of post-rock (ambient, chamber rock) groups of which Slint was among the first and most influential.
Why would I waste time arguing for sure locks anyway? Oops, without my vote Nirvana might NEVER get in the hall. I'M CLICKING YES AS FAST AS I CAN!

This is precisely why I think a Musician's Hall of Fame would vindicate the lack of recognition that the bands that Kit/Casper/William champion suffer. It wouldn't even have to be an adversarial "Fuck You" to the R&R Hall, but just a sincere place to start honoring and collecting a history that will probably be ignored by a more mainstream Hall.
Why hasn't this been proposed or started? What would it really take for Pitchfork to initiate it? Who needs a multi-million dollar museum to sell tickets to? Make it a simple DIY museum in New York or San Francisco or Austin.
Imagine the vitriol, the joy, the authenticity of the debates over whether Television should get in before Wire, over who should induct Alex Chilton, over Mudhoney vs Green River... and the satisfaction of knowing these are real, pragmatic debates and not just a Fantasy League menagerie.
And then the Wenner R&R Hall won't be such a controversy or so begrudged; it will just be accepted as the mainstream flavored gallery.

Concerning Slint, love 'em, but I don't think they had enough of major importance to warrant induction. Throw them in the Television category...the best stuff is mind blowing, but there just isn't enough of it.

Id also put dream theater in cause they influenced the whole prog metal scene & they came out before tool did

Green Day, Nine Inch Nails and Nirvana are the obvious locks, and Pavement (as of now) is a huge question mark.

How about adding a page for The Sundays? I heard "Here's Where the Story Ends" on the radio today; good song.

I'd perfer...
- Atheist
- Cannibal Corpse (due to their first demo that was recorded in '89)
- Extreme
- The Mighty Mighty Bosstones
- Obitaury
- The Offspring

I'd like to see The Orb, but it's really not gonna happen, even if he is almost entirely to credit for ambient house; a pretty big sub-genre in 90s electronica.
The Manics certainly wouldn't be a bad pick, but from what I've heard, "A Design For Life" and "If You Tolerate This..." are their only songs to make any sort of commercial dent in the US.
If you haven't noticed, there's three locks for eventual induction here. Two of them shouldn't be getting in.

Here is the 5 for this year,

Ani DiFranco

They don't have to induct anyone on that whole 2014 list...they might "lose their minds" and start inducting artists that should've been inducted a long time ago, and not pick anyone in their first year of eligibility in any given year. They are starting to develop a real credibility problem...must be why attendance is down...

Well, excuse me for not being "underground" enough to know who any of those bands are, but just because an act was/is mainstream doesn't mean that debates over them have no value, doesn't mean that they're in the middle of a "Fantasy League menagerie", and doesn't mean that we need more elitist, Pitchfork-esque places to honor them.

Trey:
Couldn't agree w/ you more about the notion of mainstream acts not having any value. The wider the berth of talent there is in any gien moment, the better things are for rock in general.
I will question you on why you suggest Deep Purple should get in over Metallica right away. This is also a question for anyone out there who says that before "Group B" should get in "Group A" should get in. I have no problem w/ both acts going in, but I wonder why people say these things. I have seen people say that Rush or Genesis or who ever should get in before Metallica, Pearl Jam, etc. My question is, what exactly did Metallica or Pearl Jam do to these bands? If all of them are in theory =, shouldn't it not be an issue as to who goes in a given year?
Why punish a more modern act for something it has no control over?
Posted by Cheesecrop on Tuesday, 07.8.08 @ 18:39pm
Compared with the two previous years, 2014/2015 looks from this vantage point like there will be some backlog clearing after some new artists from the era of the rap and thrash revolutions get inducted.
Of the newly eligible artists for 2014/2015, Nine Inch Nails should certainly get in as the band who made industrial music known. (It will be interesting to see if Ministry get considered around this time). Lenny Kravitz and Manic Street Preachers may have a chance, but if what Wenner says about Pavement is true then it is hard to see many of the rest getting in, though I would give Ani DiFranco more of a chance than the site seems to.
With this era seeing the coming of guitar feedback and shoegazer rock, it will be interesting to see if 2014/2015 is when Sonic Youth and My Bloody Valentine get seriously considered. Less competition than in the two previous years will help.

There are some interesting choices this year, but to me Pavement is the MUST HAVE (and therefore, has no shot!) Green Day will probably be the only "No Brainer" (Since Petty is in already).
Hopefully by 2014 Prog will finally be in and we wont still be wondering why Yes & Genesis are not in (Let alone Rush and Kiss!) -
<sarcasm> Thank God at least Madonna is in!! </sarcasm>

Not a whole lot of worthy selections here, but there are a few shoo-in candidates.
My votes:
Green Day (although I hate to admit this due to my unbridled hatred of Green Day, they are the lock this year...I think I just died a little inside by saying that)
Nine Inch Nails (the other lock...and a far better, far more important group than Green Day if you ask me)
Pavement
Lenny Kravitz just doesn't cut it for me; my condolences to his fans. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are already in; why's Petty on this ballot? He didn't really do anything of note outside of the Heartbreakers.
The (likely) inductees:
Green Day
Nine Inch Nails
Pavement
Sorry, fans of Garth Brooks: this is the ROCK AND ROLL Hall of Fame, not the Country Hall of Fame (hmm...then why are Woody Guthrie and Johnny Cash in here? Oh well...). Selena's life makes a good story (remarkable young talent tragically cut down in the prime of life), but she didn't do anything spectacular, so she doesn't get in.

This year is great. We got Green Day (the top '90s punk group) NIN (industrial gods) and Pavement (underground music, might not get in first year, but some year). Those three are locks, but TP snd Lenny Kravitz might also get at least on the ballot.

I think Donna Summer now deserves to be introduced to the rock and Roll Hall of fame because she not has made disco music but also hard rock music with singles such as Hot Stuff (with which grammy prize won in 1979 for best female rock vocal performance), the wonderer, He´s a rebel, Proection and now with the super hit Fame (The Game), and besides she has influenced many female artists including Madonna, Beyonce, Kylie Minogue, and others artists

Green Day has been around for what, 22 years? Yeah, i think they have, if not maybe longer. they started out when they were only 14 years old. they've inspired so many other rock bands out there today like Weezer, Fall out Boy, Blink 182 and so on, if it wasn't for Green Daym those bands would NEVER make it. Green Day is definately future rock legends if they are not already. i don't see why people have to critize them just because you don't like them, c'mon it pisses me off! Green Day deserves the world's respect, not thier shit. oh and just so all you "haters" know, the next time you little pussy's say that Green Day sucks, just remember the little bands you may like, Green Day also inspired them too and they wouldn't be around without them. They also beat Ac/dc, dave matthews band, and U2 at the 2009 AMA's. i know you might be thinking that how could they beat those bands, if you think about it you'll know that they have ALOT more fans than those people and i mean ALOT!! also, those bands are people called HAS-BEENS. if you don't know, a has-been is a band who USE TO BE POPULAR WHAYYY BACK IN THE DAY!! Green Day will be inducted weather you like it or not, so suck my dick.

"the next time you little pussy's say that Green Day sucks, just remember the little bands you may like, Green Day also inspired them too and they wouldn't be around without them."
Actually, The Libertines, Porcupine Tree, The Cobra Skulls, Mastodon and Lamb of God all owe nothing to Green Day, but thanks for playing. I will concede that they should be inducted for their influence, but some people might not take kindly to being called "pussies" by some bratty prep-school girl. If you came up to me and said that I'd be shoving rocks up your ass and pissing on your skirt.
"Green Day is definately future rock legends if they are not already."
No they're music isn't legendary. On the 7th day, God presented The Ramones and Buzzcocks and declared them kings of pop-punk.
"i don't see why people have to critize them just because you don't like them, c'mon it pisses me off!"
People criticize them because they feel their music is non-threatening, boring and unoriginal (I'd agree with the latter bit for sure), plus to piss off their stupid fans like you.
"They also beat Ac/dc, dave matthews band, and U2 at the 2009 AMA's. i know you might be thinking that how could they beat those bands, if you think about it you'll know that they have ALOT more fans than those people and i mean ALOT!!"
Actually I was thinking about why people think the AMA's are relevant, when they're not. Those bands all have more fans and are better than Green Day. RIAA sales figures: U2 51.5 million albums sold, AC/DC 71 million, DMB 32 mill. and Green Day 22.5 mill. So if you were talking about sales figures in the US then Green Day actually come LAST!
"also, those bands are people called HAS-BEENS. if you don't know, a has-been is a band who USE TO BE POPULAR WHAYYY BACK IN THE DAY!!"
AC/DC's last album actually did better than "21st Century Breakdown", and U2's and DMB's were just as succesful. Green Day isn't as big as ever either.
"Green Day will be inducted weather you like it or not, so suck my d*ck."
Maybe if you focused more on your spelling and less on pretending to be a tranny then more people would take you seriously.

I'm not a preppy school girl, well maybe I am but I don't wear skirts. And you said that you'd be shoving rocks up my ass..... I don't think so, you wouldn't get near me if you tried so stop pretending to be some bad ass cause I highly doubt that you are. Oh and belive it or not, just because I am a preppy school girl doesn't mean that I don't know Green Day's older stuff, bitch, I've been listening to them since the 2nd grade so you wanna judge me again by being a little prettier and blonder than your ugly ass go ahead but at least I have a better chance at getting a boyfriend than you. HAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH.... again, suck my dick XD

Sam, okay I don't know if you are actually agreeing with me on inducting them or if you are against the fact? It seems you've just cut them down like 20 times already? I think you might have some problems. Next time, don't say your gonna do something to someone you have never met because first of all, you don't know me and you might've thought that shoving rocks up my ass would make me "fear" calling you a pussy to your face well guess what, it didn't. I would love to watch you shove rocks up my ass because you wouldn't stand a chance. You would probably like me if you knew me but you don't so stop pretending to be something that your not. By the way, are you a boy or a girl.. or both?
Posted by Brittany on Sunday, 08.22.10 @ 22:37pm
I think you may have caught my comments over-reacted because of the exlamation points and the all caped words but I was just using expression to get my point across. And I have no idea why you mentioned Lamb of God on your comment for me because seriously... I absolutely HATE Lamb of God, and to be honest, I'm sure half of the world would agree with me. They are like psycho satinist who sing about or scream about how much life sucks and how they want to kill everyone. Are you for real? Have they ever been nominated for anything.... I don't think so, and Green Day has nothing to do with those lame bands you named... sorry.

Jim, DarinRG, Tahvo Parvianen: I don't care what you think about me because really, I've been a Green Day fan for 10+ years and I'm not trying to insult that Sam asshole I'm just trying to stick up for one of my favorite bands. And yes I do know what I'm talking about, I've only been listening to their music for years now and for people like you guys who have no idea who I am have no right to tell me that I need to take medication and that I supposedly have sexual fantasies about them is ridiculous, Ok seriously, who the hell do you think you are? Have I ever commented on having sexual fantasies, no. You're just putting words in my mouth to try to make everyone think that I'm some kind of asshole, but really I'm not and don't appreciate some of things you have said about me. First of all you don't know me so stop making me look like some kind of prissy little girl who doesn't know what she's talking about. That really pissed me off to see how arogant some of you people can be. This is a site to state your opinions on whether Green Day is worthy of getting inducted, not to isult people on their opinions.

Fair enough, but theres no need for heated arguments here. You may not like Sam's opinion, but try and debate him on musical merits rather than insults next time.
Also Green Day is eligible for induction under our Rock Hall Revisited section, in case you feel like voting for them.

Sorry guys.

I don't want to cause any fueding either because to me it's not worth it. I really do apologize to everyone here cause I know sometimes I might take things the wrong way and then I start insulting people over dumb stuff just because they didn't agree with me, I hope you guys will accept my apology and for now on I won't take things personally like I do, I've had a problem with taking everything personally and I still need to work on that but therefore, I'm sorry. We're here to support Green Day's induction and not try to pick fights with people that may not agree. Sam, DarinRG, Jim and Tahvo, I apologize.

Posted by Brittany on Tuesday, 10.12.10 @ 08:06am
I don't trust the industry, Brittany. The industry flooded and watered-down the market with boy bands. I do agree that Green Day changed things in the 90's, but to say Pavement didn't make an impact is slightly dishonest. Copied from AllMusic:
"With their fractured songs, unexpected blasts of feedback, laconic vocals, cryptic literate lyrics, and defiant low-fidelity, Pavement were one of the most influential and distinctive bands to emerge from the American underground in the '90s. Pavement, along with Sebadoh, were the leaders of the lo-fi movement that dominated U.S. indie rock in the early '90s."
I've yet to check out Pavement, but it sounds like they did change music, and I know that they influenced the change in direction of Blur, who to me were one of the best bands of the 90's. Green Day will definitely be inducted upon eligiblity, and I hope Pavement will as well though they probably won't (Blur won't either, but considering all the people who should be in but aren't they shouldn't consider it a big deal.)

Some of these nominations are very questionable. In terms of musicianship I can't see a band like Green Day in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but based on what they did for the music industry they probably deserve it. Also, I love Gang Starr but I'm a little confused to why a rap group has a chance to go to the rock and roll hall of fame, but if they get in that would be awesome. Nirvana and Nine Inch Nails will and should get in hands down. A band that goes overlooked here is Pavement. One of the great experimental punk bands of all time. They definitely should be in there. If you haven't heard of them check out their album "Slanted & Enchanted." Bob Mould and Tom Petty should also get in.

I've been reading a few of the above comments. God you people are insane. Can we all just agree that Green Day has some relevance and deserves some recognition? But to be honest, lets backtrack and now we can agree that Green Day isn't even in the top 500 bands of all time (in terms of musicianship and songwriting). Those spots would be held by bands like Tool, Rage Against the Machine, Soundgarden, Nirvana, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Metallica, Derek and the Dominoes, Bob Marley and the Wailers, Alice In Chains, you know, bands that can actually play their instruments...

1. Green Day--currently darlings for the powers-that-be. Look for it.
2. Lenny Kravitz--a fairly straightforward style of rock'n'roll that will get recognized
3. Nine Inch Nails--Might be a little too fringe, stylistically, but name recognition that can carry over
4. Queen Latifah--The first female superstar of hip-hop
5. Pavement--Another act on this list I don't see making it, but given the love from the gang here, I'll include them.
Beyond that, gotta say I don't see any of them making it. I sure hope BNL don't

My picks for 2015 are the following
1. Green Day- The Shoe-In Pick
2. Janet Jackson- She will finally get recognize at the peek of her 25th anniversary of Rhythm Nation.
3. Ringo Starr- The Final Solo Beatle Induction
4. The Pixies- With Nirvana in the Hall of Fame as part of the 2014 class, the Pixies will follow behind them.
5. Bon Jovi- They will sneek in just like Sting in 2014, their induction will open the doors for other arena rock arist like Def Leppard and Journey in future years

I think Thin Lizzy deserves to be elected to the rock and roll hall of fame.
They are one of the greatest hard rock bands ever!
They were a brillant live band< had terrific albums like Jailbreak, Johnny the fox, bad reputation, live and dangerous, black rose, china town and thunder and lightning.
they had many hits Whiskey in the Jar, boy's are back in town, jailbreak, don't believe a word, Bad Reputation, Dancing in the moonlight, waiting for an alibi, do anything you want to, china town, killer on the loose, thunder and lightning, and dedecation.
They were fronted by one of the best in rock history Phil lynott a great singer, bass player, and songwiter.
They some of the best lead guiterists ever Eric Bell, Scott Gorham, Brian Robertson, Gary Moore, Snowy white and john sykes.
Brian downey is an excellent drummer and Darren wharton a very good guitar player.
there were many rock bands's who were inspired by Thin lizzy Smashing pumpkins, Iron maiden, Bon jovi, Metalicca, Saxson, darkness, guns and roses.
Thin lIzzy are one of the best bands of all time!

When will you consider the group KANSAS for induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame?
I feel that their Hit Songs & unique style of music makes them an automatic choice for consideration. Fans want them inducted.
Thank You.

Where is Motley Crue? Sold more records than Warrant and Skid Row combined! They are actually still touring and still doing very well! 2014-2015 suppose to have a movie, album and farewell tour! I looked all the way til 2020 and no Crue! Enuff Z'nuff! C'mon! Motley were and still is the Kings of the Hair Bands!
