Regarding concert sellers don't forget: Dave Matthews band was the biggest box office draw of the 2000s.

I do think box-office drawing power has been the most under valued metric here especially with rock recently (the cure, Radiohead, def Leppard, doobie bros, nin, Depeche mode, foo fighters, Duran Duran, Rage, Ozzy, DMB are all massive live draws)

I agree. Ozzy and Buffet means the most here.

Jimmy is a big concert seller, whose critically divisive but widely beloved by fans and fellow musicians, Crue fit that same bill.

Ozzy was an 80s metal star, more edged than def Leppard or bon Jovi. Crue could find a slot in based on Ozzy. and they'd add 4 more metal votes to help out say motorhead or maiden.

I'm going to add some thoughts on this class:

I'm shocked that Mariah Carey and Lenny Kravitz both missed out, but they will be back and will both get in the next time that they are nominated.

Happy to see Mary J. Blige, Cher, Dave Matthews Band, Foreigner, Peter Frampton, Kool & The Gang, Ozzy Osbourne, A Tribe Called Quest, Jimmy Buffett, MC5, Dionne Warwick and Big Mama Thornton all get in this year.

This is only the second time that the entire top five of the fan vote (Dave Matthews Band, Peter Frampton, Foreigner, Ozzy Osbourne and Cher) all got in (the first being two years ago in 2022 when Duran Duran, Eminem, Pat Benatar, Eurythmics and Dolly Parton all got in after finishing in the top five of the fan vote).

Something we haven't worth mentioned yet that this is the first time that we have had a 8 Performer inductee class in over two decades, The last time that we had 8 inductees was back in 2001, I think that official Rock Hall voters now voting for 7 people instead of 5 now has really helped the huge backlog of deserving acts waiting to get in and we're going to see 7-8 acts get in each year now.

Also worth mentioning is that 17 of the 19 nominees for the 2018 class (Bon Jovi, The Cars, Dire Straits, The Moody Blues, Nina Simone, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Radiohead, The Zombies, Depeche Mode, LL Cool J, Eurythmics, Judas Priest, Kate Bush, Rage Against The Machine, Chaka Khan, Link Wray and MC5), 13 of the 15 nominees for the 2019 class (The Cure, Def Leppard, Janet Jackson, Stevie Nicks, Radiohead, Roxy Music, The Zombies, Todd Rundgren, LL Cool J, Kraftwerk, Rage Against The Machine, Chaka Khan and MC5), 13 of the 16 nominees for the 2020 class (Depeche Mode, The Doobie Brothers, Whitney Houston, Nine Inch Nails, The Notorious B.I.G., T. Rex, Todd Rundgren, Kraftwerk, Pat Benatar, Judas Priest, Chaka Khan, Dave Matthews Band and MC5), 12 of the 16 nominees for the 2021 class (Foo Fighters, The Go-Go's, Jay-Z, Carole King, Todd Rundgren, Tina Turner, LL Cool J, Kate Bush, Rage Against The Machine, Chaka Khan, Mary J. Blige and Dionne Warwick) and 13 of the 17 nominees for the 2022 class (Pat Benatar, Duran Duran, Eminem, Eurythmics, Dolly Parton, Lionel Richie, Carly Simon, Judas Priest, Kate Bush, Rage Against The Machine, A Tribe Called Quest, MC5 and Dionne Warwick) are now all in. The only nominees from 2018-2022 that are still not in yet are The J. Geils Band and The Meters for the 2018 class, Devo and John Prine for the 2019 class, Motorhead, Soundgarden and Thin Lizzy for the 2020 class, Devo, Iron Maiden, Fela Kuti and New York Dolls for the 2021 class and Beck, Devo, Fela Kuti and New York Dolls for the 2022 class, so that is good news for Devo, Motorhead, Soundgarden, Thin Lizzy, Iron Maiden, New York Dolls and Beck getting in soon either via the Performer category or in the Musical Excellence category.

All of the 60's, 70's and early 80's (aka Baby Boomer) acts that were nominated this year got in (Cher, Foreigner, Peter Frampton, Kool & The Gang and Ozzy Osbourne plus Jimmy Buffett, MC5 (who were nominated in 2003, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2022) and Dionne Warwick (who was nominated in 2021 and 2022) in the Musical Excellence category) so this year's class is dominated by baby boomer acts and I'm so happy about that, That is good news for acts that have been previously nominated and debuted or peaked in the 60's, 70's and early 80's like Devo (nominated in 2019, 2021 and 2022), Iron Maiden (nominated in 2021 and 2023), Joy Division/New Order (nominated in 2023), Cyndi Lauper (nominated in 2023), Motorhead (nominated in 2020), New York Dolls (nominated in 2001, 2021 and 2022), The Replacements (nominated in 2014), The Smiths (nominated in 2015 and 2016), Sting (nominated in 2015), Thin Lizzy (nominated in 2020), War (nominated in 2009, 2012 and 2015) and Warren Zevon (nominated in 2023) to get in either via the Performer category or the Musical Excellence category soon. and names that debuted or peaked in the late 60's, 70's and early 80's that will appear on the ballot and get in either via the Performer category or the Musical Excellence soon as well like Diana Ross, Phil Collins, Bad Company, Jethro Tull, Boston, The Monkees, The Guess Who, Joe Cocker, The B-52's, INXS, Billy Idol, The Bangles, Tears For Fears, Bryan Adams, Harry Nilsson, Roberta Flack, Patti LaBelle, Barry White, Luther Vandross and The Pointer Sisters.

Worth noting is that the three 90's acts that were inducted this year were all previously nominated (Mary J. Blige was nominated in 2021, Dave Matthews Band was nominated and won the fan vote in 2020 and A Tribe Called Quest were nominated in 2022 and 2023), so that is good news for Beck (nominated in 2022) and Soundgarden (nominated in 2020 and 2023) the next time that they are on the ballot.

For the ones that missed out on induction this year, I think that Mariah Carey and Lenny Kravitz definitely have the best chances of getting in next year along with Sade, Oasis, Jane's Addiction and Eric B. & Rakim.

So overall, A very solid class this year.

Bring on Johnny Hallyday, Serge Gainsbourg, Fela Kuti, Miriam Makeba, Celia Cruz, Mariya Takeuchi, Joao Gilberto, Nina Hagen, Yellow Magic Orchestra, Mina, Grace Jones, Kylie Minogue
-90's dad rock is a token spot (DMBx2024) that left Lenny waiting in the wings. Still a backlog of 70's and 80's equivalents and maybe they rushed too quickly to the 90's
-Slightly disappointed at Sinead'd omission, even though I'd dismissed her as a one hit wonder. Would've been an emotional highlight in the show
-This year's ceremony will be a parade of "last hurrahs" for many
-I think Cher shows up contributing low effort. She doesn't walk the red carpet, doesn't perform. She accepts the award and exits the building. Similar to Janet Jackson's presentation

Adding my late thoughts to the inductee class this year:

-Disappointed by the expected, routine and standardized lack of women. All five female nominees were much worthier than Peter Frampton
-A bit shocked at Lenny Kravitz omission, especially after he groveled. "Friends of the Hall" induction is a one token vacancy every year (Frampton)?
-I'm old enough to remember when Frampton and Buffett were punch lines. Gen X hated them, millennials never heard of them, boomers have one foot in death's door but still the loudest voices in the room
-Joyful at Dionne Warwick, would've liked Bacharach and David to triangulate
-Big Mama Thornton finally the most significant snub in the history of this institution is rectified but in a crowded year of living and active performers so her placement in the ceremony would probably be brief
-DMB induction nudges me towards conspiracy theory. But glad to get them over with, so we can all move on
-We were all dead wrong about Mariah. Having listened to all the WCATRH Patreon episodes, Mary benefit the most from this snub. A few of those men stated they were voting for Mary because they refused to vote for Mariah. Chris Molanphy admitted to tokenizing most of his picks so he wouldn't have to vote for her. Still some some toxic, outdated opinions. Thinking now they'll always find an excuse to exclude her from their ballot, whether it's in favour of another contemporary (Lauryn Hill), overdue predecesor (Diana Ross), or glossy successor (Beyonce). She gets in eventually somehow and I'm thinking they wait another five years until she turns 60 to give her Musical Excellence
-Open up that International ("non-English") Side Category already

So far Mike Pinder, Dickey Betts, Denny Lane and Henry Farmborough have died since the ceremony, a very small amount compared to previous years. This class is probably too big for a tribute performance.

He's had a number of controversies with NWA but it's also made him seem more normal. He also has kind of made it as big a part of his brand as the Pumpkins.

This new show seems to spotlight both the Pumpkins and NWA also it's on The CW so it's gonna be super accessible.

About the 2024 Inductees, Timothy Pernell wrote:
Now I have had more time to think of who I believe will be nominated for 2025, I think I've come up with a decent list of returning nominees and newer acts:

Returning:
Beck - I don't know how good his chances are but I'm confident they'll nominate him again. It'll still be a test to see if he could actually get in despite the respect he's gotten over the years.
Devo - if they don't nominate Joy Division/New Order, they'd pick these guys again for the main class.
Lenny Kravitz - I'm not as confident as I was earlier that he'd return but him returning wouldn't surprise me.
Cyndi Lauper - this will be her second nomination and she could easily get in this time as opposed to last.
New York Dolls - I think Todd Rundgren's induction as well as the inductions of T. Rex and Roxy Music puts them in good standing for another chance at the hilt.
Sinead O'Connor - I think the reason voters didn't choose her because they agree that her nomination was "too soon". I see her returning in 2025 and she'll likely get in this time (or not).
Soundgarden - I think it's time to put Jane's Addiction aside unless they wanna do to them what they did to MC5 for years!
Thin Lizzy - the only other 70s rock act I see that they could try to bring back.
Warren Zevon - I can see a return for him. It will still be a challenge if he could get in or not but it's worth a shot.

New:
Phil Collins - after Ozzy's induction, he's the next one to get a dual induction. I think it's almost guaranteed he'll get nominated for 2025. Especially before he passes.
Luther Vandross - I think the Hall is gonna start nominating more 1980s R&B acts than 1970s R&B acts. Meaning War is gonna have to wait, meaning the Ohio Players are gonna have to wait (or not at all). And I think this will be THE 1980s R&B nominee of next year's class. He could be a first ballot inductee but it depends on how many voters are familiar with him. Dionne's induction definitely helps his chances as well as the inductions of his bigger 1980s pop-R&B peers (Whitney, George Michael).
OutKast - the induction of A Tribe Called Quest definitely opens the door for the duo of Andre 3000 and Big Boi to finally get their long awaited nomination/induction.
Alice in Chains - as much as Soundgarden deserves induction, AIC could actually give them a run with their nomination.
Tracy Chapman - She had a big boost in recent years via the revival of Fast Car. This could interest the Hall to nominate her.
Melissa Etheridge - I don't know if they really consider her but after Sheryl Crow, she seems to be the next female rock nominee coming.

----
I may be way off but these are my picks.

Those still in play for a possible return/new nod:
Mariah Carey (I think if the field doesn't have more than 2 R&B nominees, she's in there whatever year she returns, next year or even much later)
Diana Ross (like Ozzy, she has a chance to be a dual inductee and she could follow Tina Turner, Carole King and Stevie Nicks as the fourth dual female inductee, depends on how they view her in the rock era)
Lenny Kravitz (not too confident but he's not out of the woods yet)
White Stripes (this is a case of might be or might not but never say never)
Bangles (they were the only other top 80s female rock band after the Go-Gos, I want a nod but I don't know if they'll get it)
Runaways (I don't know why I'm not as confident of their chances as I was of Joan Jett's years ago but they could get a nod, would NOT surprise me. Would be well-earned too).

My picks for side door inductions:

Musical Excellence picks:
Ashford & Simpson
Burt Bacharach and Hal David
The Wailers (Bob Marley's group/band)
The Sweet Inspirations (the backing vocalists formed by Whitney Houston's mother Cissy and who sang background for RRHOF inductees such as Elvis, Aretha and Dionne)

Musical/early influence:
Roy Brown (the originator behind "Good Rockin' Tonight" and whose sound predated Little Richard and Elvis)
Marvelettes (the Motown group to help bring the label's early success, they were nominated for the main class twice so I can see them getting in through this class)
Clara Ward (how many years has it been since a gospel act got in? 2018? Clara could definitely be the next one. Without her, you really don't have Aretha)

Ahmet Ertegun:
Florence Greenburg (Scepter Records founder, without which, New Jersey greats such as Dionne Warwick and the Shirelles wouldn't have been in)
Sylvia Moy (Motown songwriter behind Stevie Wonder's cherished 1960s Motown hits)
Ed Sullivan
----
Still early but I had to get my thoughts together. I was too happy when I made my initial list that I didn't really think straight lmao

Maybe Motley Crue or The Scorpions are the next Metal acts to be nominated cause those are the only 2 Classic Metal acts left can I see doing well with voters

Scorpions already have a permanent exhibit in the Rock Hall's museum so

And Winds of Changes just feels so timely especially what's going on with Russia and Ukraine

The discussion of thin Lizzy makes me wonder about blue oyster cult. Another beloved influential acclaimed 70s hard rock. More staples than Lizzy too. Both are far more acclaimed than foreigner or Frampton. Could BÖC be one of the next classic rock acts? I'd hope so cause I love them

  Power,

I think thin Lizzy would do amazing with rock voters on a second shot. Although despite Phil Lynott being black, I think the majority of black voters would ignore them. The alliance of black voters seems to only extend to pop/RNB/funk/soul/rap and not rock. DMB had zero votes from black voters despite many black members.

2020 had Lizzy competing with Doobie Brothers T Rex Motörhead Soundgarden Judas Priest MC5 Pat Benatar Todd Rundgren and even NIN Depeche Mode amongst rock voters.

A ballot with only Thin Lizzy on it, or them alongside like king crimson, Thin Lizzy would soar in, a garunteed induction. Very beloved influencial acclaimed band.

Thin Lizzy might have a better chance than Motorhead and Maiden because they have two hit classic rock singles. If placed on the right ballot (where they are the only or one of two classic rock nominees, with only 1-2 classic rock acts and the rest being alternative rock nominees), they could become the inevitable choice for white boomers, allowing them to sneak in. The question is, can Tom Morello help Thin Lizzy get nominated again, considering Thin Lizzy's popularity is definitely weaker than that of Maiden and other classic rock acts?

The induction of the Dave Matthews Band makes me wonder if Iron Maiden will be voted in next time. Both acts are similar: big album sellers with almost no pop hit singles, and both have huge cult fan groups. Iron Maiden will have a big tour this year, which could help their chances. Some industry voters might consider voting for them since Maiden is expected to generate substantial revenue. However, one disadvantage for Maiden is that metal is still not favored by the Hall (Ozzy was inducted mainly due to his star power), whereas DMB, with its roots music influence, might be more acceptable to voters.

  Alec Tessitore,

I don't think there are any nomination limits before being selected for musical excellence now. Jimmy Buffett completely disrupted the whole system. So now, if the Rock Hall feels it necessary, anyone can be directly chosen for musical excellence, regardless of whether they were previously not nominated, or nominated once, twice, three times, or five times.

If they nominate Zevon or Motorhead again and they feel like it won't work against on their 2nd on the main ballot then they will get Musical Excellence as I can't see that happening only after just 1 nomination

Actually I feel like Maiden will get its 3rd nomination in 2025 and they will get the Musical Excellence route

However good chance also Ronnie James Dio is headed towards the Muscial Excellence route soon

After the possible induction of the New York Dolls into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame next year, I believe Motorhead will be inducted in musical excellence in the near future. Motorhead seems to be the best successor to MC5 and the New York Dolls.

Also, I feel Warren Zevon and John Prine will be inducted in musical excellence in the future as well, similar to Jimmy Buffett.
