I love me some Hall & Oates. I used to like them just because I found their 80's music videos cheesy and hilarious. But the more I listened, I realized that I geniunely loved the songs. Classic soul tunes (Rich Girl, Sara Smile) and great pop songs (Private Eyes, Maneater etc.)

Just for Oates' gheri curl and mustache, they deserve it.

I don't appreciate the shutout thus far. I can't go for that (no can do).

I think they should induct Oates, but not Hall.

I remember on Casey Kasem's American Top 40 tv show he did a countdown of the top ten biggest duos of all time, and H&O came as number one. Well that's how it stands today, but seems as if the Rock Hall can't seem to figure that out for themselves.

they should be already a no brainer

Alomg with Genesis and The Dobbie Brothers, and absolute, unmitigated embarassment that these icons are not given their due respect and are outside the velvet ropes. The Hall needs to pull their head out of their as* and stop inducting the likes of Percy Sledge and The Dells before these acts - a shamefest.

I've been to the rrhof 2x. I can't understand how some bands are in and others aren't. No Journey, Genesis, H&O. They all should be in. If that no talent madonna gets in I'll never go back

Posted by Randy on Saturday, 11.17.07 @ 11:22am

They are the biggest selling duo of all time. Yes, bigger than Simon & Garfunkel, bigger than the Everly Brothers, bigger than Lyme & Cybelle. They deserve to be in, much more so than Leonard frickin' Cohen.

Posted by john bull on Thursday, 12.13.07 @ 14:06pm

I am totally ASTONISHED myself that my all-time favorite band has not gotten in the RNR HOF and yet we have this year MADONNA getting in? I mean C'MON NOW, THIS IS TOTAL LUNACY!!! Madonna is no more deserving of the Hall Of Fame than Gloria Estefan or Janet Jackson and their ilk....Hall & Oates have been making great music for over 36 years and the PISS POOR selection board of whomever these so called "experts" are pick some really LAME choices in their mix year after year and let true ICONS like Hall & Oates get the shaft. This is why I will NEVER give the RNR HOF ANY sort of credibility until I see Hall & Oates enshrined. Ok, <rant off> hehe.
P.S.- To Randy who posted above...Madonna is getting in this year....now you can't go back (I don't blame you at all!)

Posted by Brett Hughes on Saturday, 01.5.08 @ 01:53am

So many great hits. Hurt, IMO, by their catagorization as a pop band. Saw them open for ELO in 1978 on the Out of the Blue tour. That was one hell of a concert.

H&O suck out loud. "One On One" makes me want to perform a self-lobotomy.

Posted by Philip on Saturday, 05.10.08 @ 02:42am

I personally think they should have been in before Madonna. I really want the person who choices to email me because I have a few questions for the person and if the person has the time I would really appreciate. I was very upset over Madonna being in the Hall of Fame. There are a few who really should have been picked first. Hall and Oates has done more in their career and deserves it more than her!!!!!!!

Thank you,
Stephanie Adams

Posted by Stephanie Adams on Tuesday, 05.20.08 @ 15:59pm

Philip said up above: 'H&O suck out loud. "One On One" makes me want to perform a self-lobotomy.'

Why don't you try (before your self-lobotomy) to write a song like 'One on One'. I'm certainly not saying that's the best song Hall & Oates ever did (far from it), but try & write some yourself to get an idea of how easy it is.

Posted by Paul in KY on Thursday, 07.10.08 @ 13:14pm

Paul, what on Earth made you think I was critiquing the songwriting quality? Truthfully, I don't even know the lyrics. The vocal performance on that song by the duo is so nerve-shreddingly grating that I tune it out when I hear it.

Posted by Philip on Friday, 07.11.08 @ 16:26pm

Phillip, I read that into your first succinct critique of 'One on One'. Try wailing like that yourself to get an idea of how easy it is ;-)

Posted by Paul in KY on Monday, 07.14.08 @ 13:51pm

Your attempts to speak in the comparative are irrelevant. If one cannot wail and sound decent, one should not try it, period. They simply should not have done it at all. If you can't sing falsetto, don't do it. Their singing is awful. Plain and simple.

Posted by Philip on Tuesday, 07.15.08 @ 00:26am

Philip, we'll just have to agree to disagree here. Overall, I think Daryl Hall (who does most of the singing) is quite a good singer. When you're a white dude & alot a black people swear you are black until they see you perform, then I think you can sing a bit.

You don't like them & I respect your opinion. Certainly, you can go to other threads on other artists here & see there's a few I think are lousy.

Posted by Paul in KY on Tuesday, 07.15.08 @ 13:48pm

Fair enough.

Posted by Philip on Tuesday, 07.15.08 @ 13:54pm

Hall and Oates are awesome! Daryl Hall is one of the best singers ever! This duo defintely should be in the Hall of Fame.

Posted by Julie on Monday, 09.22.08 @ 22:39pm

IMO it's appaling that a duo which DOMINATED the late the period between 75 and 86 aren't ALREADY in the HOF. we,the fans, should be allowed to vote for someone to be inducted. *shakes head* hall and oates not what a shame and a sham.

Posted by baw "the lumberjack" on Thursday, 10.2.08 @ 14:58pm

"Innovation and Influence"
Who did they influence? No one... How innovative were they? They weren't..... The rock and roll hall of fame is not based on record sales, chart positons, or DOMINATING anything. No one is influenced by them, and they didn't push any new ground. And if anyone makes another Madonna complaint, Listen to "Like a Prayer". That Albums Is More Innovative than anything Hall & Oates ever did... Sorry guys :)

Posted by Calzone on Tuesday, 10.14.08 @ 16:29pm

Damn shame I'm glad they addressed not being in.I hope to see them get in one day.One of my favorite albums by them is Hall and Oates live at the Apollo with David Ruffin and Eddie Kendricks.

Posted by Leon on Friday, 10.17.08 @ 17:59pm

The fact that Madonna is in the RNR HOF is just disgusting. I wouldn't even consider her music 'rock'.

Hall & Oates are my favorite duo of all time. If they are not in the HOF in my lifetime (I'm 16) there is more than serious injustice in this world.

Posted by Kelly on Saturday, 01.3.09 @ 12:37pm

Posted by MOD MIKE on Thursday, 01.15.09 @ 05:37am

right, calzone. the rock hall vote is dominated by whomever a bunch of old farts from rolling stone thinks is cool. saying anything madonna ever did breaks new ground, when she's never done anything in her life for the love of the art, shows you're just a smacked ass. whereas h&o actually synthesized pop-rock with the gamble & huff sound to create "rock 'n' soul." the reason nobody has followed in their footsteps is that few have the vocal chops of daryl hall. funny, but most people would think something original is good. only you and the morons doing the voting actually hold it against bands -- not just this one but many. how else to explain not a single prog-rock band (floyd doesn't count) in yet?

Posted by alby on Thursday, 01.22.09 @ 18:23pm

Like Kelly, I too am 16 years old and Hall & Oates happens to be my favorite band.

The Hall of Fame is always looking for hits, influence and bull crap from the nominees but isn't it enough that people from a younger decade are listening to them?! I have a lot of friends who defended Madonna when she got in and I pretty much shot all of them down.

Hall & Oates are the soul brothers of Philadelphia and it's practically a war crime that they're not in.

While on the subject of war crimes, why the hell isn't DEEP PURPLE in the HOF?!?!?!?

This is ridiculous! Daryl Hall and John Oates have more than earned their place in the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame end of story!

Posted by Arlene Johnson on Wednesday, 02.25.09 @ 20:01pm

Hall & Oates undoubted deserve to be in the HoF. Some of the best Pop-Rock music of the 70s/80s came from these guys. They are one of the most important blue-eyed soul acts of all time. By the way, The Eagle's "New Kid in Town" is about their jealousy of Hall & Oates overtaking their popularity, ha. So c'mon and induct H&O already, I know it would make my dreams come true.

Posted by Jonny on Monday, 03.2.09 @ 22:53pm

Could go either way for me. I won't be upset if they never get in but if they do it really wouldn't make a difference (unless somebody gives me a really good reason for either yes or no I probably won't change my mind either)

Posted by Liz on Friday, 08.21.09 @ 05:55am

I have been a H&O fan for over 30 years. I can actually remember the first time I heard "Rich Girl" on the radio. I think it is a downright shame they are not in the HOF yet. You only have to tune in to Live at Daryl's House once to witness their influence on other artists.

Posted by Margo on Sunday, 09.13.09 @ 14:34pm

Daryl Hall & John Oates have been tremendously influential in bringing "blue-eyed soul" to audiences. Their music transcended across all racial boundaries and continues to entertain many today. As Margo (above) states, Live at Daryl's House is a great example of how Daryl Hall continues to influence the music world. He brings in artists from all backgrounds to create new, beautiful music.

These talented individuals should already be inducted into the RRHOF.

Posted by Bill on Tuesday, 11.3.09 @ 11:45am

Hall and Oates have paved the way for so many performers and are such an inspiration for numerous artists.... they should have been inducted years ago-

hall and oates should be in rrhof there music has last the test of time. you can hear there song done by so many performers today and they have a sound that is there, for more than 30 years when hear a h&o you hear a rock/soul/pop classic is not that what rrhof is all about.

Should be there already. The way they have been snubbed certainly doesn't reflect their contributions to the music community and their fans. Already in songwriter's HOF, their music & lyrics live on thru the decades and are now influencing new performers. Longing for the day "I Can Stop Dreaming, Yes Can Do"! C ya'll at their induction.

Posted by phillychic on Thursday, 04.1.10 @ 14:42pm

Artists were covering Hall and Oates songs before the duo became famous. Taveras went to number one with a cover of She's Gone before H and O had a top ten hit. How many times has "I Cant Go For That" been sampled by rap artists? But I guess THEY dont count right? Country artist Jimmy Wayne recently went top 40 with a cover of Sara Smile. Their influence is everywhere.

And as someone pointed out, they are in the Songwriters Hall of Fame! If musicians voted for members of the RRHOF, Hall and Oates would have entered in 1997. Many of the members in the Hall of Fame have either covered, sampled, or written songs with Hall and Oates! Mick Jagger, Diana Ross, Eric Clapton,Kenny Gamble, Leon Huff...just to name a very few.

Posted by A Loyd on Saturday, 04.10.10 @ 21:46pm

Their accomplishments and musicianship have been well documented so there's no denying they have been woefully overlooked and/or deliberately ignored.

But to those who argue their music isn't really "rock and roll" I would ask how have the following acts, great though they may be, been inducted into the ROCK & ROLL HoF and NOT Hall & Oates?

2. The Bee Gees
3. Bobby Darin
4. Brenda Lee
5. Joni Mitchell
6. Ricky Nelson
7. Madonna (who can forget that R&R anthem "Shining Star"?)

Posted by Claire on Monday, 04.26.10 @ 05:04am

Hall and Oates are simply the best.Nobody, and I mean nobody has the pipes like Daryl Hall did. They are so known for their 80s hits and rightly so , for those were great songs. However, their 70s music is ,imo, even better. Rich Girl, Camilla, Wait for Me, Sara Smile, and I could go on and on.Just amazing songs that bring out so much emotion. If these dumbasses with their negative post would actually go back and listen to some of their music over the last 40 yrs then I am sure many of them would realize as so many new artists and old artists alike have, that they have earned ,overwhelmingly earned, a place in the HOF. Not many artists have crossed generational barriers like Hall and Oates. As many have already mentioned, their appeal is to old and young ppl alike. And with Live from Daryls House, Daryl Hall has been active in bringin young new artists to the light as well as performing with the established ,classic musicians like , The Doors, Rob Thomas and many others.Im tired of writing here but I could go on for a long time on the credentials of Hall and Oates. Put these guys in, and until they are in, I will echo others comments and say that the RRHOF has absolutely no credibility.

To A Lloyd, Claire, and Frank:
RIGHT ON!!!!!!!! RIGHT ON!!!!!!!!!
The music and words of H&O are NOTHING short of BRILLIANT, INCREDIBLE, yes, and even INSPIRATIONAL!!!!!!!!!!! Not as political, social as Dylan, Browne, Springsteen, or Young, yet their songs capture the essence of LIFE . . . LOVE, in all its PAIN and JOY!!!!!!!! (ie. Open all Night, Family Man, She's Gone, It's a Laugh, You Make My Dreams, Method of Modern Love, Missed Opportunity, So Close, Why Do Lovers Break Each Other's Hearts, Wait For Me, and on . . and on . . . and on!!!) Reminds me a little of SMOKEY R's.
words and music. "Ooh yeah", he's in the RRHF!!
H&O not in . . . NOTHING but A TRAVESTY!!!!!!!!!

Considering the HOF committee has not considered H&O since they became eligible, I wouldn't count on consideration any time soon.

For me, H&O is just another of those perfectly fine, enjoyable acts who did nothing special in the work to stand out from the pack.

Should be inducted, but likely dismissed as too poppy, which is a shame. They made some of the best pop music of the 1980s.

Posted by Jim on Tuesday, 11.9.10 @ 15:28pm

Yes, they could be cheesey (Private Eyes or Family Man M-E-T-H-OD videos anyone?), but what makes Hall & Oates worthy are the songs, and not just the mid-late 70's period (probably favored by HOF voters, She's Gone, Sara Smile, Rich Girl,etc..), but the fact that they re-invented themselves when the 80's came along with videos, and not only made themselves viable, but in fact likely the most prolific hitmaking duo in rock history. That's got to count for something, and there's no need for me to catalogue all of the hits as they are well known by all. This band ought to have its day, as many lesser acts, and even bands that don't even know what a power chord is have gotten elected. 'Nuff said.

Posted by David Balzano on Saturday, 11.13.10 @ 08:38am

I take back my statement about them not being influential on the Projected board. They've been steadily gaining in influence the past decade, been sampled numerous times and according to Daryl Hall, Eddie Van Halen copied the keyboard part on Kiss On My List for Jump (using a synth) and Michael Jackson used a drum machine for Beat It after hearing I Can't Go For That. Also Brandon Flowers said Rich Girl was the most instructive pop single ever written. Considering how much the Hall loves R&B, I'm surprised they haven't been considered yet.

Posted by Jim on Saturday, 12.11.10 @ 22:42pm

Hall and Oates belong in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as much as anyone else from that era. Singers, songwriters, musicians...they did it all and had a lot of hits. Why doesn't Jann Wenner like them?

Unbelievable H&O weren't inducted long ago. Must be a political thing!

Even today they are still recording and branching out into other areas of music.

Posted by Judy on Friday, 09.9.11 @ 12:23pm

I think the precedent for induction by a duo has long been set by the Everly Brothers, Righteous Brothers, and Sam & Dave. Those artists meant just as much in their era, as Hall & Oates did in theirs.

The songs hold up still, 25-35 years later, as evidenced by their ongoing popularity as a touring act. They were the most successful duo of their era, and one of the most successful of all time.

How they are still NOT in the Hall is beyond me.

I second the motion on Hall & Oates. Maybe not the most innovative band (did make good use of the oland CR-78) but had six US No. 1s and wrote some decent songs. Less of an impact around the world. But a worthy band.

Posted by astrodog on Friday, 12.9.11 @ 00:15am

Hall and Oates were obviously not the inventors of blue-eyed soul, but they were almost certainly the most successful purveyors of it. (Can anyone name any group that did it better--that isn't already in the Hall?) They are definitely worthy of the Hall of Fame.

When they were considered previously, was it as Daryl Hall and John Oates (a duo) or Hall and Oates (a group, presumably including a band)? Does anyone know?
