I'm shocked nobody on this site has mentioned anything about Coachella! Anyway, I remember this site in the past talked about how headliners would possibly foreshadow future R&RHOFers.

Here are the 3 headliners for this year:

AC/DC (already in)
Jack White (we all know he'll be at least a future Clyde McPhatter club person)
Drake

Not sure what this means for other festivals this year (AC/DC headlining an alt-rock festival?), but Drake on the other hand, he's becoming a bigger star and his days from DeGrassi are way behind him. He's already done his own headlining tour, so who knows if he'll be a legend or not.

Jason, really stoked to see AC/DC headlining Coachella. Hopefully that means they might do The Hangout or Bonnaroo (both of which I am going to).

Hope you get to go to Bonnaroo this year!

AC/DC was a surprise, but they're pop culture kitsch royalty, which usually plays well on the Coachella main stage. Drake at Coachella is why the letters W, T & F were invented, though. Strong mid card, as usual, which, in my past experience is where the best moments of the festival happen.

Here's an opinion piece on this year's lineup that I found and enjoyed:

Darin, thanks for the link. Heard about a few new bands I would like to check out.

Also think it is a strong lineup.

Drake is a big UK fan, so he's got that going for him :-)

For your outsider who doesn't dig deep enough, Drake is known for cheesy mediocre pop songs like One Dance. The problem for Drake is he has so much music, its extremely versatile and, in true hiphop fashion, his work as a guest or feature, his loosies and his mixtapes have always been way better material than his full length albums. For the hiphop fan, Drake is known of myriad of loosies and underground classics like 0 to 100, Back2Back or 5AM in Toronto or forging a new approach to R&B-fused hiphop ala November 18th or Headlines or demolishing on his guest verses on say "Pop That" or "No Shopping". Drake changed hiphop forever even more so than say Jay-Z by changing the style of rap-singing and fusing the two together in a way that has blurred the two genres completely in a way that has aggravated hiphop traditionalists. At the same time, his lyrical ability is still good enough to be along side with the best of them. After all, "Diplomatic Immunity" is the only chorus-less top 10 hit stacked with triple entendrees Ive ever heard of. Plus, in a mere 10 years, Drake has more hits than any other male artist in history included Elvis Presley. Yet, oddly he is still probably the most underrated dismissed artist. Say what you will but he doesnt make standard conventional pop music. Its weirdly popular yet still innovative. Is he worthy of Rock N Roll? in my opinion, absolutely

Drake has broken the Beatles 55 year old record by scoring his 30th top 5 single in the United States. People can talk shit but he is pretty clearly the most popular and influential artist of the 21st Century so far.

Can you elaborate on how he is the most popular and influential artist of the 21st century?

Beyoncé on a cultural level is a bigger deal than drake and I'd say the biggest icon of the 21st century tho she lags in sales
Adele has highest selling Album of 21st century and 25 also broke record for most albums ever sold in a week
Taylor swift has 4 albums that sold over a million more so than anyone in 21st century
Eminem overall with over 227 million album units sold has anihilated drake in sales and is the highest selling rap artist of all time, some would even argue That lil Wayne with his mumble rap, 50 cent with his club rap, and others are more influential than drake as well.

Influence is hard to track but more people cover Adele/Beyoncé/even Rihanna songs than drake, that much I can say.

So no drake is not the most popular and influential artist of the 21st century, in fact he is not even the most popular or influential rapper.

No one is actually truly buying drakes music as much as these other artists, streaming is not valid measure of popularity or else that allows any artist from any decade to be the most streamed/most popular. Hell if every Chinese and Indian student played Mozart while they studied on Spotify then Mozart would be the most popular artist of the 21st century by that logic.

Sure drake very much had changed music marketing, the sound of rap, and the way songs are designed in the streaming/tiktok.

Many of those you mention didn't engage in the streaming games or meme usage while drake did and as a result they, with the exception of adele, are now copying drake on those fronts. This can be seen as a negative but it's still very much influence. It's also resulted in him basically becoming the most listened to artist in the states and globally of probably the last 25 years when you factor in features. There have been literal months where drake was on every major playlist on spotify because he had a song off his new album which just barely fit the playlist description.

The troll game has been very kind to drake. As has the merch game where he was a vital early player to the modern era of partnerships with big brands...it actually got him and nba ring.

Also while drake is not covered often he's helped make stars of producers and toronto artists including the weeknd, nav, denzel curry (the toronto sound is largely seen as the most dominant forfe in pop for the last 15 years) and that's mot getting into his scouting of smaller producers. There's also the rise of signing rappers (he is often credited as the final step towards that after outkast and 50), emo rap, soundcloud rap, the resurgence of the house music sound (he was pretty involved in Beyonce's new house album) which are all partially credited to him.

Also if you're gonna say he can't move units then because then you'll have to reject swift, Beyonce, eminem, kayne as major pop stars of the 2010s as well. Like anyone coule claim the streaming king but he did and that does matter cause he's never exited the charts. Like the system has changed and we have to accept that

Also just to note

I'm not saying drake is the most important act of this era.....bts is
