Hard to believe Peter Paul & Mary are not in RRHOF yet. Seems like the type of group RRHOF puts in. Leavin on a Jet Plane & Puff The Magic Dragon are Classic songs. Hoping they get inducted in 2015. KING

FRL- Please add "Leaving On A Jet Plane" by Peter Paul and Mary to the Essential Songs portion of this page as it was voted into the Song Project quite a while ago.

If I Had A Hammer

P P and M in the rnr hall of fame?..what a joke.No disrespect to them, but they are as far away from a rnr vibe as possible.Hell they don't even have a drummer, electric guitars. or rocknroll songs. You might as well have Joan Baez in there. To say they are folk rock is ridiculous..Dylan help popularize folk rock when he plugged in..P P and M never plugged in..and I am sure that the remaining members of PP and M..would be the first to agree that they are light years from being a rocknroll act.

Agree with you on Peter, Paul, & Mary mrxyz. I think they were very influential to later artists and their voices blended together making timeless songs. I'm always amazed how they delivered time and again just good voices and acoustic guitar. Blowin In The Wind & Leaving On A Jet Plane just a few Classics. I would vote PPM in RRHOF. Folk Music legends. KING

I'm curious why Peter, Paul & Mary and more of the Folk artists like Ochs, Joan Baez, etc. haven't been inducted. There has been some support for PPM as their timeless songs appear throughout pop culture. Hoping they are nominated this year and inducted soon. Playing some If I Had A Hammer right now. KING

Across all the categories, KING, the Rock Hall has been much more irregular and inconsistent with tipping their hat to the folk infused side of rock. That may be the fault of the folk crowd too. Folks felt betrayed when Dylan plugged in, remember? So artists such as Peter, Paul, And Mary, and Joan Baez, Phil Ochs, and perhaps most so the Kingston Trio, would be very reticent to accept any accolade from the Rock Hall, and might even ask the voters to not vote for them.

All that said, I'm definitely a big Yes on Peter, Paul, And Mary and the Kingston Trio, and a maybe on Baez and Ochs.

This reminds me a bit of Tom Lehrer's old joke that a folk musician is someone who thinks singing 50 verses of "On Top of Old Smoky" twice as fun as singing 25.

I'm also a big 'yes' for PP&M, in fact they are the only group I'm really enthusiastic about in my nominee predictions this year. The purest attitude definitely hurts them (I think Yarrow tried to physically unplug Dylan's guitar at Newport, depending on who you believe), but they helped to popularize Dylan, inspired most folk-rock acts, and were the opening act for the March on Washington, I think that alone is a compelling case, but let me add this:

Way back in 2006, I was in South Dakota, attending a PP&M concert to celebrate the opening of the George McGovern Library at the town of Mitchell's Corn Palace. (Its exterior is actually decorated in mosaics made out of corn from that year's harvest.) Mary Travers was going through treatment for cancer, and sat down thru the concert, in obvious pain-- until the encore, "If I Had a Hammer." Summoning what strength she could, she winced as she used her cane to stand up for that last song and finished it on her feet. As strange as it may seem, I think that was, in its way, the most badass moment I've seen in a rock and roll concert I've attended.

Have to agree with PopeCharming on Peter Paul & Mary and their future induction. Their link to Bob Dylan and making hits of his songs I thought would push them over the top.
As a person who sang Soprano in choir as a young King and owning low Tenor range or higher, I can appreciate PPM lush vocal melodies and incredible talent. I'm still amazed 3 musicians can make that good of music with a few acoustic guitars. For those in search of woman candidates to induct, Mary Travers fits the bill. She sang in PPM close to 50 years.
I've always been impressed with the Folk Music artists of the 60's. PPM was on the ground floor of this unique music and deserve RRHOF induction. KING

My musical investigation say way over do

I think there is a good chance Peter, Paul, & Mary is nominated this year. PPM has been eligible for 30 Induction cycle and no nominations. Joan Baez when finally placed on the ballot sailed into the Rock & Roll HOF. This could be a good omen for Peter, Paul, And Mary. There are many deserving groups still not inducted yet...Bad Company, Def Leppard, Iron Maiden,Judas Priest, Radiohead, Scorpions etc. However, Peter, Paul, & Mary have been waiting a long time for induction. This should be their year. In these politically charged times, some soothing acoustic guitars and heavenly voices are the perfect tonic. PPM music was important in the 60's in 2018 and will be 100 years from now. Honestly, there is no good argument against their induction. KING

The question is, how do people not in the music, but rather just fans, make an impact enough to get the in the HOF

Posted by martin katz on Wednesday, 10/24/2018 @ 16:00pm

I think yes. Some artists just transcend many different genre's of music. You all know their music today.
The 70 year olds likely even the 7 year olds. Sure, they are not folk ROCK, but still, I think they should be nominated. Let the committee decide and the voters have their voice.

If you want to honor a serial sexual abuser, why not include Jeffrey Epstein, The Former Guy and Eliot Spitzer along with Yarrow and his partners who say they never knew anything about the years long abusive activity ? Come on!

Of course they deserve to be inducted into the RRHOF they play steel string guitars which many in the RRHOF are using so the "electric" guitar rationale does not hold water. They have produced many memorable songs some of which are even sung by RRHOF members.
