Close Call:
N.W.A.
Interestingly, no real disputes. Anybody worth a damn from the class of 2012 has a fine shot at making it in.

I'd perfer...
- Excel (a band who was close friends with Suicidal Tendencies)
- Henry Rollins
- Napalm Death
- Pixies
- Testament
- Uncle Slam (another band who was close friends with Suicidal Tendencies)

If Public Enemy is not inducted as a part of the Class of 2012, there is no justice in the world!!!!

"Interestingly, no real disputes."
Well, I disagree. I can perhaps see Sinead O'Connor and The La's getting in, although I'm not really sure whether either SHOULD be inducted. What do you think?

Solid class here in 2012. Casper is right on.. Jane's, PE, Soundgarden, and Pixies. The only question is whether or not they will all be first ballot (unlikely).

I would be so proud of Goo Goo Dolls if they at least made the nom ballot, and completely blown away if they got in. I'd also love to see Jane's Addiction in there, too.

what an incredibly weak year for music
Posted by windfall on Monday, 09.22.08 @ 20:33pm
2012/2013 from this vantage point looks like the first year where there might be multiple newly eligible artists on the ballot.
Public Enemy must be a certainty to get in on the first ballot, and the Pixies. People don't realise that, as well as an important influence, the Pixies were big sellers in Europe, but "Doolittle" has sold something like 750,000 copies in the US. N.W.A. and Soundgarden should also get on the ballot first time but perhaps not in, and the KLF are an odd chance.
Among more "pop" artists we should not forget George Michael and Terence Trent D'Arby.
Of previously eligible artists, with the coming of thrash, which along with the rap revolution made the late eighties the most creative period in the past thirty years, Slayer may well be on the ballot. Though (with less competition) Slayer would have more chance of getting admission in 2011/2012, 25 years after "Reign In Blood".
Posted by Julien Peter Benney on Thursday, 09.25.08 @ 17:48pm
I think the Pixies, Public Enemy and Soundgarden are no-brainers, first or second year inductees. The Pixies pretty much were the link from college radio to what would become "alternative" much like Joy Division was the bridge band between punk and what would follow. They absolutely get in. And Public Enemy is probably the most important Rap act ever. There isn't any debate about them. Soundgarden? The Hall might make them wait until Nirvana gets in, but that won't take long.
Others? Jane's Addiction stands a great chance. N.W.A., as much as I dislike them, made a huge impact as well. They most likely get in. I can see support for Sinead O'Connor and to a lesser extent George Michael as well.

Roy...can you do anything else but make lists??? Why don't you talk in depth about some of these artists instead of constantly making lists that don't really mean anything...?
Another thing...putting Gloria Gaynor on a list for HoF consideration shows me you're just pulling names out of a hat. From someone who was knee-deep in the club scene during that time, trust me, she really wasn't all that special. She had a couple of hits (the one that got played in clubs the most was 'Anybody Wanna Party", not what was heard on the radio. "I Will Survive" was not a "disco anthem" by any stretch), but that's about it. Donna Summer I can see a bit, Gloria Gaynor...no chance!

yeah this year is the beginning of alt rock being inducted into the hall with jane's addiction, soundgarden, and the pixies.
Posted by Joey on Sunday, 04.26.09 @ 13:29pm
Soundgarden is not Alternative; at least as far as Music sub-genres are concerned. They were a hard rock band that just happened to come from Seattle around the same time as Nirvana did. That is the extent of any similarities between the two.
Posted by Dameon on Sunday, 04.26.09 @ 19:29pm
you think that most of these bands would make it? WRONG, i can see soundgarden and pixes goin in but the others, no.
Posted by meep on Monday, 06.29.09 @ 08:46am
Really, Meep?
I see Public Enemy as a lock for the 2012/2013 ballot, and N.W.A., while I don't see them getting in the same year as PE, are likely to be the first "gangsta rap" artists represented in the Hall.
As for Pixies and Soundgarden - the committee will need to seriously consider and induct bands like The Replacements and Sonic Youth if Pixies are to have a serious chance, and Soundgarden I see being included eventually, but not before Nirvana and Pearl Jam. And yes, I recognize that Soundgarden came before both of those bands, I just don't see them being the very first grunge band being inducted
Posted by Antonio on Monday, 06.29.09 @ 10:20am
A terrific year, plain and simple; I had fun choosing my class for this year.
My votes:
Public Enemy (the lock; that's the least the Hall can do to honor the greatest rap outfit ever)
Jane's Addiction
Pixies
Soundgarden
N.W.A.
The (likely) inductees
Public Enemy
Jane's Addiction
Soundgarden
N.W.A.
George Michael (I hate admitting this one)
Pixies are one of the most important bands ever, as far as I'm concerned, but since Sonic Youth and the Replacements don't seem to be in (as some one else mentioned earlier), I'm guessing that the selection committee had their heads up their asses in the '80's; therefore, they probably won't get in this time (a damn shame, too; Pixies are far better than likely inductees N.W.A. and George Michael and did far more for music than either one of those two [though you could certainly debate N.W.A.]).
Posted by AreUExperienced on Monday, 07.13.09 @ 20:29pm
There should be a Rap Hall of Fame for the influential rappers. There isn't, so Public Enemy is in, NWA too. Soundgarden is in, maybe not this year but some year, being one of the earliest major grunge bands, but other than that, no one but George Michael stands out.

Death needs to be in. Chuck Schuldiner started the death metal genre, was a great guitarist, and died too young. He would have made some great music if her were still around today. R.I.P. Chuck.

Actually, Possessed had an album out two years before Death. This is of course not forgetting proto-death metal efforts from '70s felt puppets, such as Cookie Monster and River Bottom Nightmare Band.

My votes, in this order:
1. The KLF - invented their own genre and then shut it down. Brilliant, catchy, dance-able, chant-able, gone too soon. Their last album never gets old to me, and
2. Jane's Addiction - had more creativity and art than a hundred metal bands combined
3. NWA - incredible amount of talent, marketing prowess, practically invented gansta rap. Without them, there would be no career for Tupac or Snoop Dog or Luda, not to mention them members themselves.
4. Public Enemy - a shoe in. Most consistently innovative set of albums of any rap group.
5. Pixies - no Nirvana without the Pixies.
6. George Michael - really talented guy, torpedoed his own career in the mid 90s unfortunately
7. Sinead O'Connor - incredibly talented, see #6.

N.W.A. started "Gangsta Rap" so they will get in.
Public Enemy will get in.
Zakk Wylde could get in.
DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince should get in because they were the first hip hop artists to win a grammy.
And the Goo Goo Dolls should get in but I don't think they will.

N.W.A. Public Enemy, Jane's Addiction and Pixies are all worthy of induction. Out of those, PE and Jane's are the likely 1st ballots. Pixies could have a tough time as the Hall's been indifferent to the College Rock thing so far (though everyone in that section's chances go up once Nirvana are inducted.) N.W.A. weren't as critically acclaimed as PE so they'll have to wait behind them. I could see George Michael making it, though objectively I don't think he should. As for Sinead O'Connor; not a chance.

No really, stop joking! Where's your real list. I
wouldn't vote for any of these artists. Not even Patti Smyth. However I would vote for the following: The Moody Blues, Paul Revere & the Raiders, Ringo Starr(or are they waiting until he dies, The Cars. They are many others. But if any of your choices made that would only add fuel to the fire as to what's wrong with the rock and roll hall of shame.
Posted by Glaze on Saturday, 09.17.11 @ 15:45pm
So basically you stopped listening to music made after 1980, and your viewpoint of rock and roll is a conservative one? K... rick b might be even more devoid of credibility.

i know death metal is not the most popular genre out there, but chuck schuldinger and co. deserve to be in for creating that genre. it would be shameful to not put him in

My comments?
Where the f is Boston, Kansas, and Alice In Chains?
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is the biggest joke to Rock and Roll.
I mean it's sad, it's Rock and Roll. Not Pop, House, Rap, R&B. Rock and Roll. They should not call it the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but the Rolling Stone Music Hall of Fame. Period.
Sad sad sad that these three aforementioned bands are not in there.

Please include Glen Campbell as a nominee for the class of 2012. His latest release, "Ghost on a Canvas". is truly special! He deserves being in the RR Hall of Fame for his vast amount of contributions he has made to the R and R business.
Thank you,

The Tragically Hip

From where I sit, the most likely from this group to get a nomination are as follows:
1. Public Enemy--You know Toure is gonna push for them. Besides which, they deserve it.
2. N.W.A.--Same thing.
3. Gloria Estefan--Latin sensation, and still sexy as hell (at least I think so). Her main liability is that she went adult contemporary way too soon after breaking apart from the Miami Sound Machine... look for a joint nomination here.
4. Jody Watley... another potential candidate for the joint nomination, but less likely. Still, her R&B output could get her noticed.
5. Pixies--the obvious indie/undie reps on this list
6. George Michael--another possible joint nomination with Wham! Solo, I don't think he's too deserving, but he's got a long enough string of hits that it's possible.
7. Sinead O'Connor--super arty singer/songwriter, and foe of organized religion. That's good enough for the NomCom.
8. M.C. Hammer--you laugh, but he's the landmark of hip-hop finally breaking through the glass ceiling all the way to the Top of the Hot 100.
9. Debbie Gibson--again, you laugh, but past outfits of hers have made it in the museum as an exhibit, so there's some love for her.
10. Jane's Addiction--modern rock rep. First gotta get the RHCP in before they move to these guys.

Either of these would be awesome just for the spectacle of the meltdown that it would cause the KISS/Rush cultists.

I see only 3 names i would consider NWA Public Enemy and Janes Addiction 2013 class could be catchup year
Posted by Robert Ewing on Saturday, 11.26.11 @ 00:52am
Boy George: Nope, he's a joke nowadays and culture club isn't enough.
Death: The hall don't acknowledge regular metal, they certainly won't induct these guys.
DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince: I doubt it.
George Michael: I'm not seeing it, after the 90's his career ahs taken a real downfall.
King Missle: Way too obscure for the hall.
The La's: They only had one noteworth yalbum and it won't be enough.
M.C. Hammer: He helped bring rap into the mainstream but he's not given any respect at all by critics so it won't happen.
Milli Vanilli: Oh man, if these guys got in there'd be a riot.
N.W.A.: 2nd ballot probably, publci enemy will take precedence but they are guaranteed a place in.
Napalm Death: The hall couldn't care less about grindcore so no.
Patty Smyth: dohohoho.
Pixies: Maybe, they've got credibility and influence but the hall hasn't even considered SOnic youth or the Replacements so it's not guaranteed.
Public Enemy: First ballot, they are among the most important rap groups.
Rick Astley: of course.
The Sugarcubes: If bjork is to get in it will be due to her solo career, The Sugarcubes are just a footnote.

Wow, Roger Friedman thinks the Hall has pretty much inducted everybody that deserves to be inducted now. And he is blatantly ignoring all the big name eligibles next year like Jane's Addiction, Public Enemy and the Pixies. For instance, he said:
"The new group eligible in 2012 includes Milli Vanilli, MCHammer, and Sinead O’Connor. Yikes."
How about Public Enemy, Jane's Addiction and the Pixies, Mr. Friedman? Or are you ignorant to their existence. Mr. Friedman also says Bon Jovi are pretty much the last deserving eligible who aren't currently in Cleveland:
"The Peppers and GnR are pretty much the last big names left to induct except for Bon Jovi. (I’m told Jon Bon Jovi is pretty furious at this point, and he’s right.)"
This confirms my suspicions that BJ will be back on the nominee list next year. Also, apparently Mr. Friedman thinks Sting's solo career is more important than acts like Joy Division, New Order, the Smiths, Cheap Trick or the Cars. Not to mention everybody from Kraftwerk to Deep Purple.

Also, he referred to the Small Faces/the Faces as "the Rod Stewart Group" Hmmmmm.
Posted by Tahvo Parvianen on Thursday, 12.8.11 @ 07:21am
Roger Friedman's article was atrocious in it's errors and downright stupidity. Friedman is exactly the kind of out of touch critic that's stuck in the past and his own personal tastes that the HOF does not need on the "Nominating Committee" nor "Voting Committee." That article was a joke.

Two things. Why not Bon Jovi?
Second. There are two Guns n roses. How can you induct the old original one when the second one is floating around. Sounds like double jeopardy to me.
Please advise

My Predictions for 2013
1. Public Enemy- Aside from the Pixies, Public Enemy are shoe-ins from this list....with the induction of the Beastie Boys in 2012, it opens the door for Chuck D, Flavor Flav and company
2. Whitney Houston- with her recent death, I think the Hall of Fame committee will push for her induction.
3. KISS- There are several artist that the Hall needs to play catch up with and KISS is near the top of the list, since they have been nominated in the past, they will be the catch-up artist to induct
4. Donna Summers- She is the final major disco act left for induction, she's been nominated 4 times, so they will put her in.
5. Peter Gabriel- He was inducted with Genesis in 2010, so now it's time to recognize his solo efforts.
The Pixies will get snubbed in my mind because they will wait until Nirvana gets in
Other artist that have a get chance of a future induction from this class are the following:
Jane's Addiction and George Michael

These artists released their first recording in 1987, which makes them eligible for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2012 (the induction ceremony will be held the year following the voting process, in 2013).
