Luke Combs' cover of Fast Car is currently a huge hit. Likely becoming one of the big hits this summer. I wouldn't be surprised if Tracy ends up on the ballot in 2024 because of the renewed attention she's getting with the song being a hit again by a country artist.

Big part of being in the RRHOF is a rebel spirit. TC has a ton of that illustrated in her songs. C'mon singer/songwriter with 3 Grammys! Vote her in!!!

Seriously, after that amazing duet performance of Fast Car with Luke Combs at the Grammys and Tracy receiving so much love from the audience, I hope the hall does not snub her for a nomination this year. It will be ridiculous if they do because she's still a beloved singer/songwriter.

Wow! One song and clamor to be inducted in the R&R Hall of Fame.
The pitiful standard of "low expectations."
Three Dog Night? Dozens of top 10 hits....no mention.
Took the Moody Blues DECADES to be installed.
Chapman? Lol
It's like Obama's Nobel Peace Prize....getting it because of skin color.

That ONE song is a reminder of what a great singer and songwriter Tracy Chapman had always been. Hate to be brutally honest, but she's more relevant than the other guys you mentioned because her songs have been covered too many times over the decades. She's more than Fast Car. She had other well known songs (Talkin' Bout a Revolution, Baby Can I Hold You, Crossroads, etc.). Fast Car is not even her biggest hit. That would be "Give Me One Reason".

Her debut album was a huge deal when it first dropped back in 1988. Before Tracy, there was this mindset that folk music was dead and gone because the 80s was dominated by the likes of Michael Jackson, Prince, Madonna, Bruce Springsteen, etc. There was this thought from record executives that her music wouldn't sell due to her making music that wasn't considered trendy at the time. Tracy proved everyone wrong when her debut album and Fast Car became major hits, winning a bunch of industry awards and, alongside Suzanne Vega and Indigo Girls, helped revived the folky singer/songwriter sound that would pave the way for female singer/songwriters in the 90s in the era of Lilith Fair.

idk anything about tracy chapman but folk music being dead in the 80s is absurd to me. you mention bruce specifically and in 1982 he released Nebraska one of his most acclaimed albums and one of the most acclaimed of the eighties.

But Bruce's other 80s output were arena rock type albums, which were more commercially successful than Nebraska. The 80s was largely dominated by new wave, hair metal, dance pop, corporate arena rock. Tracy's debut as well as Suzanne Vega's 80s albums and Indigo Girls' debut stood out in total contrast because their stripped down acoustic sound were a breath of fresh air that would have a profound impact on the female singer/songwriter movement in the 90s.
