“Barack Obama Told the Nation”, my version of Tom Paxton’s “Lyndon Johnson Told the Nation”

I got a letter from Mr. Obama
It said, “It’s time to kill Osama”
It’s time to take a stand
Through it may seem very weird
We have no jobs for you here
So we’re sending you to Afghanistan

Barack Obama told the nation
Have no fear of escalation
I’m trying everyone to please
Through it isn’t really war
We’re sending eighty thousand more
To help save Afghanistan from Afghanis

I jump off the old troop plane
And found pain in my brain
I swore until my captain called me down
Never mind how hard it’s blowing
Think of all the ground were gaining
Just don’t take a step out of town

Barack Obama told the nation
Have no fear of escalation
I’m trying everyone to please
Through it isn’t really war
We’re sending eighty thousand more
To help save Afghanistan from Afghanis

Every night the local gents
Slip out past the snoozing tents
They go to join the Taliban
In their nightly little raids
They coming marching in parade
And come throwing grenades at me

Barack Obama told the nation
Have no fear of escalation
I’m trying everyone to please
Through it isn’t really war
We’re sending eighty thousand more
To help save Afghanistan from Afghanis

We go round in great tanks
Moving around the ranks
Searching for the Taliban in vain
They told us they were playing fool
Way down in Kabul
Their battle positions to maintain

And Barack Obama told the nation
Have no fear of escalation
I’m trying everyone to please
Through it isn’t really war
We’re sending eighty thousand more
To help save Afghanistan from Afghanis

Well, here I wait in this sand
Wondering where I stand
And I know Obama loves me so
Yet how sadly I remember
Way back in October
When he said I’d never have to go

And Barack Obama told the nation
Have no fear of escalation
I’m trying everyone to please
Through it isn’t really war
We’re sending eighty thousand more
To help save Afghanistan from Afghanis
