The Shangri-Las kicked ass and then some...

"Walking in the Sand" and " I could Never Go Home" should be enough to get The Shangri-Las into the Hall of Fame.

Whoever gives the induction speech for the Shangri-Las better mention the fact that they are the first all-white female group to be inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.

There is a problem with the Shangri-las and it is the same problem with many girl bands of the 50's and 60's. In many cases on the records we still hear--it is not them singing but some of the girls who appeared in the Doc 20 feet from the spot light. While many times Mary Weiss was put into the studio to do some over dubbing. And for some rock and roll purist there is still the debate on the fact they lip synced a lot when they performed live and for about two years you had a fake band on tour under the name after the sisters split amongst law suits and other fun stuff. The Shangri Las are a two hit wonder band and I do not think they should be on the same list as Kate Bush, Dolly Parton or Whitney Houston. And lets not forget that they were a creation of Brill Building machine.

The Shangri-Las are one of the best and one of the most iconic of girl groups; an important and too often over looked genre of rock music.
They meet the criteria for induction and should be on the committees radar.
As the window for inducting 60s acts is narrowing, the committee should nominate them this year.
And induct.

They were the Molly Vanilli of their time, so NOT happening! #noonecares

KXB,
Don’t know of a Molly Vanilli.
And the premise is wrong if it’s a reference to an act that mimes performances.
No further discussion.

Nobody sang on Shangri-Las records except for the Shangri-Las. Producer George Morton confirmed this, along with Mary Weiss herself during a long interview conducted by the founders of Norton Records.

The Shangs arranged all of their own vocal harmonies, and are overlooked because too much credit is given to Morton. They had more experience making records than he did when they first worked with him. They were the first entirely self-invented group of young singers in rock & roll history: They named themselves, had control over material selection, sat in on mixes and, in an extra-musical sense, designed their own stage clothes and choreography. Later in their collective career, they even managed themselves. They were no products of puppeteer producers.

To leave the group out of the Hall of Fame is to neglect a huge influence on other inductees. Iggy Pop, The Ramones, Patti Smith, Blondie and others have talked about what a massive impact the Shangs had on them -- which isn't to mention that they exhibited a new, non-submissive, tough way in which female artists could present themselves. "Girl groups" weren't chiffon-wearing, aw-shucks decorations after the Shangs. They changed everything for female performers.

Listen to "Remember (Walking in the Sand)," "Give Him a Great, Big Kiss," "Out in the Streets," "Never Again," "The Train from Kansas City," "Heaven Only Knows" and "I'll Never Learn." There's no valid Hall of Anything without the Shangs.

Chris,
Well said.
Hope to see the Shangri-Las receive a nomination this year.
They have to be on some knowledgeable committee members radar as they definitely are Hall of Fame material.
Let’s see what happens.
If they don’t receive a nomination this year or next I expect their chances are unfortunately diminished to nil.

Thanks, Mark. For some reason, self-styled "critics" seem to have an influence over such decisions, even though they don't create music. This can be good or bad, I guess, considering that Greil Marcus has recently argued, in the "Ask Greil" column on his website, that no "Hall of Fame argument has merit when Joan Jett...is in, and the Shangri-Las are not."

He names a few other inductees, including Patti Smith, and concludes that the Shangri-Las "did what all of the people I’ve mentioned did, did it with more depth, and it’s almost irrelevant that they did it first. I don’t believe for a second that Patti would waste a breath denying that; she’d use many breaths agreeing with it."

It's a good sign that even those who John Walker Ross calls the "crit-illuminati" are finally starting to speak up. Maybe Marcus has some pull. I guess we'll see!

Chris,
That is good to hear.
Good to hear Greil Marcus comment.
They definitely meet the criteria, especially in impact and influence.
Hopefully wiser heads in the nominating committee agree and get them nominated.
And inducted.

The name of this website is actually comical. Many of the artists featured here, including (of course) the Shangri-Las, are already rock legends. The title "Future Rock Legends" suggests that recording artists aren't legendary until they're in the Hall of Fame at some future point, which is of course a ridiculous idea.

Freddy,

The website used to be called FutureRockHall, but the rock and roll hall of fame wasn't too keen on the name, so this site had to change. Hence, futurerocklegends.

Understood, Steve. Thanks for the explanation.

If the Shamgri-Las are not in the RRHOF it's a travesty. I am a pioneer of Hip Hop (Afrika Bambaataa and Soulsonic Force) and how could you put GM Flash & The Furious 5 (close personal friends of mine) and others ahead of them??
