From their beginnings as America's most popular surf rock band, The Beach Boys' vocal harmonies are among the most unmistakable of the rock and roll era. They finally emerged in 1966 and were the only American band to challenge The Beatles in terms of impact on the charts and in the creative field as well.

The quintet of the Wilson brothers with cousin Mike Love and friend Al Jardine created some of the most gorgeous sounds of any rock band and with Brian Wilson's proficiency in the studio growing by leaps and bounds in the mid 60s, the group proved to be one of the best produced rock bands of all time which was shown in their 1966 masterpiece, "Pet Sounds" and the chart topping song, "Good Vibrations".

With Brian's incessant drug taking and his desrie to trump The Beatles, the group struggled on long into the 70s and 80s without him. Their music after 1966 has often criticzed, but the truth is they continued to make great music in the 70s, practically with 1976's "Sunflower" in which each member showed talents not seen in the 60s with Carl becoming a solid producer and a bandleader, Mike providing a visual focus for live shows and Dennis developing his own songwriting talents.

While legal probelms in the 90s threatened to make them obsolete, their ability to surf the commercial waves of success and musical development during the 60s has made them one of America's best rock bands.

While they've had thier problems, the group has been responsible some of the best melodies in the history of rock and roll and those harmonies are still being used today by groups like ABBA and Fleetwood Mac.

Lastly, here are some of my favorite songs by the Beach Boys: "Good Vibrations", "Barbara Ann", "Fun, Fun, Fun" and "I Get Around".

Since the Beach Boys' first single, Surfin' was out in 1961, aren't the Beach Boys eligible since 1987 ?

If I was to pick who the presenters for the 1988 inductees, they would be:

Elton John for The Beach Boys
Jeff Lynne for The Beatles
Billy Joel for The Drifters
Bruce Springsteen and Tom Petty for Bob Dylan
Michael Jackson for The Supremes

Neil Young for Woody Guthrie
Pete Seeger for Lead Belly
Jimmy Page for Les Paul

Smokey Robinson for Barry Gorby Jr.

Here's a quick question for y'all to ponder:

WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF YOU TOOK THE BEACH BOYS OUT OF ROCK AND ROLL HISTORY?

Implying that they never became musicians

Al Jardine voted for The Zombies, The Moody Blues….. and who else?

I'm guessing Link Wray,,, and who else? Who would be the other two?

Who can say, Roy? I doubt my best friends could nail down all five acts I'd vote for, so I'd be reluctant to guess how a stranger- even someone whose musical tastes are fairly on-the-record- would vote.

Al Jardine turns 77 in September.
Mike Love turned 78 in March.
Brian Wilson turns 77 in June.
Bruce Johnston turns 77 in June.

Bruce Johnston should be given an addendum induction by the Rock Hall. His trophy should say 1988, the year he should have been inducted, the year the Beach Boys were inducted. Steven Van Zandt should present it to him, or maybe Elton John should do it, since he was the original presenter for the Beach Boys.

So when does Bruce Johnston get a secret induction?

David Marks was an important part of their early sound. Bruce Johnston was a big reason why they were able to keep going when Brian Wilson became reclusive. David and Bruce got stiffed for no good reason.

Rest in Peace Jeffrey Foskett, touring member of the Beach Boys from the 1980s on (and other artists), 1956-2023.
