My all time favorite band. Obviously, there isn't much to discuss since they were inducted two decades ago, but isn't Pet Sounds great? Good Vibrations? Sunflower?

I love the Beach Boys! Here's to hoping Brian gets in for solo work soon.

They are a favorite of mine too I saw Brian Wilson in concert eight years ago and he was awesome I think its a little sad that Brian is the last member of the group thats a Wilson brother but I believe their legacy goes on.

Were David Marks and Bruce Johnston inducted with the band? They aren't mentioned on the RRHOF website, but I know who fan who swears they were. Johnston would make sense, but I'm not sure about Marks.

If the truth were known, I wonder how many "members" the Beach Boys have had? With Mike love running things, I would imagine it would add up to a small army...

I saw Brian Wilson in concert a few months ago, and it was a very touching and heartwarming (and Rocking concert!). You could tell the audience was filled with good-hearted people who loved The Beach Boys, 60s Music, but most of all, Brian Wilson. It was a beautiful experience for all involved...

1988 INDUCTEES

"Obviously, there isn't much to discuss since they were inducted two decades ago, but isn't Pet Sounds great?" No. They did deserve their induction, but Pet Sounds to me is unlistenable. Purely from a musical perspective (taking influence out of the equation) the most overrated album of all time.

Since "Surf" is the tie breaker... let's all give our hopes an prays to all the folks in the GULF and the world. Our water is our LIFE.. I think Al of the Beach Boys wrote a song called "Don't go near the Water".. How true those words are today .. If you have the time you should listen to the song...

No argument there...they need to quit analyzing and just clean it up and plug the hole!!!!

Posted by Gitarzan on Thursday, 07.8.10 @ 06:16am

Sadly, Obama isn't interested in plugging the hole. He'd rather the oil keep leeking out until he can get Cap and Trade passed.

Oh, and Sam, you're missing out on Pet Sounds. It's amazing. Give it another listen.

If you want an album from that era that's an unlistenable mess, listen to the one that's the most direct knock-off of Pet Sounds. Sgt Pepper - not that is an unlistenable mess.

Why the hell was Bruce Johnston not inducted with The Beach Boys?!

Posted by Roy on Wednesday, 09.14.11 @ 10:48am

Why was Glen Campbell not inducted with them, he was a member of the band for about 9 months? Brian Wilson said he did the high harmonies better than he did.

Posted by Paul in KY on Wednesday, 09.14.11 @ 15:14pm

After reading the wikipedia writeup, if Bruce Johnston wasn't inducted, he should have been.

Guess he needs to get with the Miracles & storm Jan Wenner's house.

We need a better source than Wikipedia to confirm who was and wasn't inducted.

This says Johnston's in.

Nick Talevski's The Unofficial Encyclopedia of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame says Johnston wasn't inducted. Mind you, Talevski always needs to be corroborated, but he's more right than wrong. Press releases also need to be corroborated, because publicists often engage in hyperbole - the press agent may have been told to say the Beach Boys were inducted into the R&RHoF, but the agent then expanded on that to mean Johnston was inducted, and he didn't say that, for example.

I'd favor Talevski until something substantive comes along, like making a trip to the R&RHoF Museum and looking at the lists of inductees.

There have been 9 offical Beach Boys over their course of existence:

Brian Wilson
Carl Wilson
Dennis Wilson
Mike Love
Alan Jardine
David Marks
Bruce Johnston
Blondie Chaplin
Ricky Fataar

All others, including John Stamos and Glen Campbell were just hired sidemen.

Sad to see the band breaking up I wonder why
?
You would think by now it should be just all about fun fun ..........

Posted by Happy on Sunday, 09.23.12 @ 12:36pm

Probably because Brian Wilson is still a nutjob and Mike Love is still an a-hole.

Posted by dezmond on Sunday, 09.23.12 @ 13:00pm

Pretty much that. And considering their ages we'll probably never see another reunion.

Posted by GFW on Sunday, 09.23.12 @ 13:43pm

Saw them at Bonnaroo. Was right up front. Some critics panned the set, but I really enjoyed it. Thaey played all the hits (finished up with Barbara Ann).

The original guys were joined by a 10 piece backing band. One of the backing band guys did all the falsetto parts. Al Jardine & Dave Marks looked the bast out of the members. Mile Love was eating up the big crowd, etc. Johnston looked like he was having a great time. Brian looked like he was drugged (par for course there, I guess).

Was glad I got to see them.

Posted by Paul in KY on Tuesday, 09.25.12 @ 11:40am

Nice job Mike Love. Who needs to play Bonnaroo when you can play this endless bingo hall/casino circuit instead?

It is a true global tragedy that the 1,000,000's of fans that love surf music and the Beach Boys can't hear and see the real thing for 1 more last musical wave...a realy pitty.

Posted by Happy on Saturday, 09.29.12 @ 12:52pm

Mike Love did not fire anybody. That was just exaggeration by the press. Love had dates booked for his so-called "Beach Boys" before the 2012 reunion tour even started. Brian Wilson, Al Jardine, and the estate of Carl Wilson still get a cut of the Mike Love band's touring income in return for letting him use the Beach Boys' name per a licensing agreement they made back in the late 90s shortly after they sort of broke up (Carl died, Al was forced out of the group by Love, Brian and/or his wife and managers were more interested in a solo career...Love, Bruce Johnston, and David Marks were the remaining three main Beach Boys, Marks left in '99 to fight his Hep C-which he fully recovered from, leaving only Love and Johnston, plus a rotating cast of professional hired hands.)

From their beginnings as America's most popular surf rock band, The Beach Boys' vocal harmonies are among the most unmistakable of the rock and roll era. They finally emerged in 1966 and were the only American band to challenge The Beatles in terms of impact on the charts and in the creative field as well.

The quintet of the Wilson brothers with cousin Mike Love and friend Al Jardine created some of the most gorgeous sounds of any rock band and with Brian Wilson's proficiency in the studio growing by leaps and bounds in the mid 60s, the group proved to be one of the best produced rock bands of all time which was shown in their 1966 masterpiece, "Pet Sounds" and the chart topping song, "Good Vibrations".

With Brian's incessant drug taking and his desrie to trump The Beatles, the group struggled on long into the 70s and 80s without him. Their music after 1966 has often criticzed, but the truth is they continued to make great music in the 70s, practically with 1976's "Sunflower" in which each member showed talents not seen in the 60s with Carl becoming a solid producer and a bandleader, Mike providing a visual focus for live shows and Dennis developing his own songwriting talents.

While legal probelms in the 90s threatened to make them obsolete, their ability to surf the commercial waves of success and musical development during the 60s has made them one of America's best rock bands.

While they've had thier problems, the group has been responsible some of the best melodies in the history of rock and roll and those harmonies are still being used today by groups like ABBA and Fleetwood Mac.

Lastly, here are some of my favorite songs by the Beach Boys: "Good Vibrations", "Barbara Ann", "Fun, Fun, Fun" and "I Get Around".

If I was to pick who the presenters for the 1988 inductees, they would be:

Elton John for The Beach Boys
Jeff Lynne for The Beatles
Billy Joel for The Drifters
Bruce Springsteen and Tom Petty for Bob Dylan
Michael Jackson for The Supremes

Neil Young for Woody Guthrie
Pete Seeger for Lead Belly
Jimmy Page for Les Paul

Smokey Robinson for Barry Gorby Jr.
