One of my favorite bands of my youth... but silly lyrics to the point of illeteracy. You have to admit, the knew how to Rawk. (Can someone lend me an umlaut?)

Scorpions deserve to be in... they were one of the leading rock artists for 2 decades (70s and 80s) and are truly on their way up again. They've both one of the best rock anthem in RYLAH andbest power ballad in SLY. I don't see any reason for the dumbasses and rock and roll hall of fame not to put Scorpions in.

The Scorpions have been around for 35 years performing all around the world. That tells you something right there! They have done so much "charity" work for every cause that is happening in the world with concerts and songs. The song "White Dove" for Africa,"Miracle" for the Tsunami victims,"Daddy's Girl" for child abuse and of course "Wind of Change" for the taking down of the Berlin Wall.Live in concert there is no better!!Klaus Miene,Rudolf Schenker and Mattias Jabs are truely amazing! Not only can they rock the house, they can play "ballands" that noone can match.Klause and Rudolf have to be considered as one of the Greatest lyrics and musical tandems around.Klaus Meine is called "The Voice" for a reason. All you have to do is listen to "Acoustica" to tell you how GREAT the Scorpions are!!!

I have been a fan of the Scorpions since 1979
when they released Lovedrive. Yeah, yeah, I
know all about the Rock of the 80's but if you
take a listen to Pure Instinct and Acoustica
you will be reminded of the musical talent of
Klaus Miene, Rudolf Schenker and Mattias Jabs.

The days of Uli Jon Roth are but a sweet memory
conjuring up nostalgia since grouping up again
in places like Colmar, France. Just this aspect
alone speaks of the on-going transformations
for which the band is known for, let alone the
astrological symbol of the Scorpion.

Sometimes I wonder if this "hall" is worthy of
a legacy such as the one being built by THE
SCORPIONS?

The Scorpions have stood the test of time for over 3 decades and are still proving their sting is just as potent yet today. With a new CD coming out in May and still headlining all over the world in front of tens of thousands, the Scorps have once again proven why they have a loyal fan base. They are more than entitled to be in the Hall of Fame. And I don't care how it sounds, rap does not belong in this genre.

They were meant to work with each other. This band is and always will be great. Not just because but because they work hard and they unite the world with their music.

Revelation 9:3 ... unto them was given power,
as the Scorpions of the Earth have Power. It's written, "There are two kinds of music; German music and bad music." The distinctive Scorpions style came from the combination of two electric guitars, a fusion of fabulously forceful power riffs with dazzlingly exuberant guitar solos. Added to which was the instantly recognizable voice of singer and front man Klaus Meine with his highly expressive and polished delivery.
Hits such as Rock You Like a Hurricane, Bad Boys Running Wild, Big City Nights, The Zoo, No One Like You, Wind of Change and their masterpiece Still Loving You; of which the critics struggled for Superlatives. Backed with an International Reputation ( World Wide ) boasting over 100 million Album Sales, 30 Platinum Albums and 78 Gold Records is proof of the Teutonic Trio's Supremacy! It's hard to argue with Succe$$.

If any band should be in the rock and roll hall if fame its the scorpions.
Bands of today and bands of their own generaton have no idea what hard work is compared to the scorpions. Just remember, that the guys grew up in post war germany, and they have struggeled with a lot of things that people in general dont have to worry about. coming out of eastern europe, singing in enlish. Not easy when your native tongue is german. They are also known for opening up the borders, not only between the east and west, but also for bands that have followed them in their footsteps- (or tried to).
I think the term hard working musicians could not fit a band more than it fits the scorpions.
These goys are from germany, but they are our true world ambassadors. - and its also claimed that after the release of love at first sting, the song still loving you was said to be responible for a baby boom in france. thats cool when you look at this sick world today.
Fan since 84

How much longer must we wait for SCORPIONS to be inducted ? I've been a huge die hard fan for 27yrs and it is so disappointing that they get looked over year after year.
Their new release this year Humanity-Hour 1 is so
AMAZING. I can't stop listening to it.

Come on Hall Of Fame!!!

IT'S TIME!!!

Posted by KaThLeEn:) on Thursday, 12.20.07 @ 17:11pm

Scorpions are overdue for this recognition. If anyone deserves to be inducted it's Scorps!! They have stood the test of time with a consistency that rivals any other classic rock band. They have never stopped touring and they have just released their 21st album. They are humanitarians and are concerned with our world events that are hastening the demise of humanity. They play all over the world in countries that until Scorpions played there have never seen a rock concert. What more could you ask for in a rock band? They are more deserving than anyone and it's an insult that they haven't already been inducted.

SCORPIONS RULE

I love "Holiday", "No One Like You" etc...
A real shame that this great band is being snubbed
It shows that the HOF have no respect for international rock bands

Posted by danny on Friday, 02.22.08 @ 17:33pm

Metalsmith - I know you like to stress your point when making your comments, but i really hope you are not serious about ending communism and you are just trying to have a little fun here. I am a fan of the Scorpions and putting aside my personal feelings, I doubt Wenner and Co. will ever allow them in. I think the only 80's Hard Rock bands that they will allow in are Bon Jovi (Very Safe), Guns and Roses and Metallica. I think Def Leppard, The Crue and all other 80's bands of this genre will never see the light of day in the HoF.

Posted by Dameon on Sunday, 02.24.08 @ 18:39pm

I am just having some fun. You're the first to realise that. I was reading an article in Guitar World that said people attribute a sudden spike in the birthrate in France to the release of the song "Still Loving You". Also, "Wind of Change" was apparently declared the most important song in German history by someone because it's associated with the fall of the Berlin Wall. All of this gave me a new respect for the Scorpions. Great musicians, but you're right, they'll never get in the Hall of Fame.

Posted by Metalsmith on Monday, 02.25.08 @ 12:46pm

Unfortunately they are in a stockpile. They are already up against the wall with other artists who are more deserving they are. Yes, they deserve to be mentioned and considered, but sadly, others will be in front of them. so sadly no, they won't make it for a very, very long time. Unless of course rules change down the road.

Posted by JasonP on Thursday, 02.28.08 @ 08:31am

Very true. Plus, I doubt they would ever induct a band from Germany. Everyone so far has been American, British or Canadian, if I'm not mistaken. One Australian group has made it, but that's an English-speaking country, which I think bears out my theory.

Posted by Metalsmith on Saturday, 03.1.08 @ 10:03am

I think Kraftwerk will get in eventually...don't understand why they aren't in now. I remember hearing "Autobahn" for the first time in '75, a definite "WOW" moment in music for me. Great innovation and far-reaching influence...isn't that what it's about?

I can think of a couple of Academy Award winners who were influenced by them...Giorgio Moroder and Vangelis. Listen to "Chariots Of Fire" and "Chase" from Midnight Express and you can hear Kraftwerk's influence.

Posted by Terry on Saturday, 03.1.08 @ 10:35am

The Scorpions are one of the best and most successful bands in history of rock music . I like them from the first time i listened to them. They are the onlyones who can have both balads and hard rock songs with a very big success.I think that if bands like sex pistols are in , and bands like metallica are about to be in , its unfair for scorpions to stay out

Posted by scorpion on Wednesday, 03.26.08 @ 10:23am

Scorpions were hugely followed back in the 80's by bands who based their sound on them. They are very much honored still yet today by musicians all over the world and their songs are still huge and used in multimedia all the time. They have consistently toured nonstop for over 30 years and have just put out their 21st CD. Scorpions are not given their due or the respect they so richly deserve. And altho they have matured, they still get on that stage and rawk us like a hurricane better than any other band today.

Posted by scorpssistah on Wednesday, 03.26.08 @ 13:48pm

Nicely stated Sistah !! I agree with you 100% !!
No other Rock N Roll band is more deserving than our SCORPIONS. How can anyone state that they do not belong in the HALL. They deserve much, much, more than to just to be mentioned or considered. They should have been inducted a long time ago!!

Dear Tassos,

We are both SCORPS fans right !!! Who are to feel like you had to reply to my comment in the first place. If I want to say Rock N Roll then so be it. Scorpions are under several types of genre from ROCK/POP, HARD ROCK, METAL. POP METAL, AND JUST PLAIN ROCK !!! I don't come on here and tell you what to say or how to say it. The main purpose here is to try and help get SCORPIONS into the "ROCK N ROLL OF FAME" By letting the FANS voices be heard and voting for them as much as possible. NOT TO ARGUE or TELL OTHER FANS WHAT TO SAY AND HOW TO SAY IT.

THANK YOU

Yes we must also admit our fault ,, we used the title Unbreakable 3 years after the Scorpions used it ,, were really not unbreakable , actually we really do hate each other. all of us have our own egos that we love about ourselves .
The Scorpions Unbreakable cd didnt even get any radio time and they're cd is way better then ours .. the only reason we got or new cd on radio is because were all gay just like the program directors that run every radio station in north america .. please vote the Scorpions in they're the real deal unlike us has beens

Scorpions have made a respectable career over 35 years long. They earn the place in Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame if not for the lenght of their continuous career, for the influence they made in rock music especially in the end of 70's and throughout 80's. They still keep doing remarkable rock music, so how come they don't have a place in the Hall yet? Vote for Scorpions!

I think there is no reason to not allow to the Scorpions being inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, i mean what is real rock and roll different than talk to your audience all around the world about loving each other and live this world as one?
Are there really so much bands who have achieved the aim like they do, just going all over the world for almost 40 years, i don't think so...
I am sure they will not be deprived of this honour, because they deserve this and so much more

Don't be reckless anymore, belive me i am trying to be so well-educated with you! Do you know at the time of antique ROME the wiseman said :

I've watched the Scorpions mature since 'Lonesome Crow' with the great Michael Schenker.M. Schenker quit to play for 'UFO'. UFO's another group that should be in the HOF as well.Uli Roth and Matais Jabbs are fantastic guitarists, too. The whole group has stood the test of time and has achieved great things, especially for a group that started out and stayed in Germany. I've seen seven Scorpions concerts and all were professional and very exhbuerantly played! Induct the Scorpions in the Hall ofFame immediately! Mark Glew

They definitely deserve to be in the hall of fame since they filled our lives with amazing music. The Scorpions are real Artists.

Posted by Valentina on Thursday, 06.5.08 @ 20:48pm

Let's be serious. The songwriting from the Scorpions doesn't hold a candle compared to UFO. UFO is no candidate for the Hall and neither should be the Scorpions. In Trance and Virgin Killer are seminal albums. Love Drive is awesome - but who's the guest guitarist? Let's start a new string and discuss the greatness of UFO. The rock ballad begins and ends with them. They have the greatest live album of all time.

Posted by Stephen C. Salinas on Thursday, 06.5.08 @ 23:11pm

I AGREE. OF COURSE WE SOULD BE SERIOUS AND THE BEST THING THAT UFO HAS ACHIVED IS TO BE COMPAIRED WITH THE LEGENDARY SCORPIONS.WORLD WIDE LIFE IS THE BEST LIVE ALBUM OF ALL TIME.
UFO ARE GREAT BUT THR SCORPIONS ARE LEENDS.THERE IS A BIT DIFFERENCE HERE!

This is a no brainer.......This band deserves the recognition that has been long overdue!!! Over 35 years of rock influence speaks for itself and they may have recently just put out their best music yet in Humanity Hour I. This would go a long way in saving some of my waning respect for the U.S. music scene.

The Scorpions are legendary and they are on a higher level than the Rock Hall of Fame. The Rock Hall of Fame would be the ones who would gain the most, by being associated with the best rock musicians ever. The Scorpions are already forever in the history of hearts and emotions of those touched by the music, while the Hall of Fame is just a temporary political body.

Yes,UFO did a nice version i *think* the other version you're thinking of is the cover by The Damned.
It was somewhat of a minor hit for them.

Lol, I can't even get offended because that line made me laugh.
Eh, it's a matter of personal taste.
Of course Dee Purple before UFO in t RRHOF.
Early Scorps i like.
The rest are just not my cup of tea.
Can't stand Bon Jovi!
I don't like their cliched' lyrics,corny sentiments,Jon's melodramatic,over emotive whine of a voice.
Just a matter of taste.

For great no frills rock i'll take:
Thin Lizzy
Deep Purple
UFO

Come on, UFO in the hall? Are you ufo?
Posted by LAKIS

Some food for thought...
In the video history of UFO "Too Hot To Handle-The Story Of UFO"
both Joe Elliott,Rick Savage,Phil Collen and Steve Harris tell how imortant an influence UFO were to them, how they were emulating to a certain degree whether it be Steve Harris copying UFO bassist Pete Way's striped trousers etc.
As of 2007 on Iron Maiden's recent tour they insisted the pre show (before Maiden took the stage) music piped into to the arenas that the audience heard was UFO.
Steve Harri's daughter who was opening the shows with her own band also performed a UFO song.
Much more influential, respected (especially in Europe) then you might think.

Posted by Gary James CA on Thursday, 10.2.08 @ 17:18pm

Of cource UFO is an influential band and of course maiden have been influenced by them but i dont think they are good enough to be compaired with maiden. I agree they are more respected as artists but theu dont have songs like the number of the beast or fear of the dark.

No.

I was a metal fan back in high school and even then I never cared much for the Scorpions. The albums are loaded with filler and their most famous songs have dated awfully to the point of parody. Let's not forget how ridiculous their power ballads are.

Iron Maiden and Judas Priest will probably never get in but they're examples of GOOD metal bands that deserve a shot.

Personally, I think the Scorpions should be banned for life for the Virgin Killer cover. What chowder-headed morons...

right you are Child, Scorpions were called Ambassadors of Rock (sez MTV). they left a big mark in Russia and were stars of The Wall Concert in Berlin (after the wall came crumbling down) ... but now I hear David Hasselhoff really brought the wall down, it was him and KITT wasn't it? (haha)

but seriously, how is it Scorpions haven't gotten consideration yet? also, word to Child: as you work through the alphabet of artists, you should leave more than just a snippet for bands like this.

Haha...I know!:) I'm from Italy and they are huge over here, and all over the Europe, and I went to Russia couple times, Scorpions are waaaaaaaaaaaaay more famous than Led Zeppelin or Guns'n'Roses...
and I mean Russia might have some crappy pop music, but it has lots of rock lovers, and Scorpions are one of the most respected bands over there, others would be The Beatles, Deep Purple, Rainbow, Slade, Nazareth, Sweet, Uriah Heep, Dio, Pink Floyd, Helloween, Manowar(I know the last 2 are pretty heavy, but still)...

Echo Awards Honor For Scorpions

The veteran German hard rock band the Scorpions will get the German Echo lifetime achievement award at the televised ceremony at Berlin O2 World on February 21, 2009.

The band, which started in 1965 and claims sales of 75 million records worldwide, will perform a medley of their hits.

"Worldwide the Scorpions are one of the top bands," said Gerd Gebhardt, executive producer of the Echo Awards, in a statement. "They started their way from Hanover's clubs to the biggest arenas of the world. Over four decades, their music has touched people of all different ages and cultures."

Last year the Scorpions played concerts for more than 150,000 fans in South America, and partnered with Greenpeace on a campaign to save the rainforests.

Scorpions are probably the most popular and well known rock band worldwide whose origin is not from either the US or a former British Empire country. This is the demonstration of rock's world wide appeal not currently in evidence in the rock hall. I believe Sepultura would be the second most known, though ABBA who are more pop-oriented may actually the most known band in this category.

I see there's a big push on for the Scorpions here. I'll be honest w/you here, I fail to see the intense relevance of the Scorpions. I know everyone knows ROCK YOU LIKE A HURRICANE, NO ONE LIKE YOU, WINDS OF CHANGE, etc. but when you look at it closer, this is a band that had several hit albums in the mid-late 80's, and that's pretty much it. I know there is a list on here that shows their albums back to 1972, but all that does is reinforce my point. Take away the goodwill gestures of the 1990's and 2000's, and you have a band that has a staggering following overseas, but little impact here.

I know I sound like I'm the shallow thinking American here, but it was already discussed on another post that this Hall tends to recognize American impact more than worldwide impact. Don't get me wrong when it comes to them getting in - I like their music, and I wouldn't scream about it if they did get in, cause they definitely fit the bill in terms of their sound. I just don't really see much in terms of I & I here to work on, unless you count worldwide effect (which te Hall seems less than inclined to do).

Speaking of Winds Of Change and the Scorpions, just a reminder that today is the 20th anniversary of the opening up of the Berlin Wall. I was only 8 when it happened, but even I remember this having a deep effect on me.

20 years of a reunified Germany. It's a grand thing.

Cheesecrop,

The Influence and Innovation criteria that the Rock and Roll Hall of Lame has implemented is a total sham that they themselves don't use most of the time.

Innovation is something that is almost never achieved in the world of rock and roll or other types of music, it is simply a re-invention of something that has already been done. A new take on an old formula, young musicians breathing new life into rock music with their take on how they think it should be played, but rarely innovative.

As far as influence goes, do we really know how many musicians the Scorpions did or didn't influence? No. Only the ones that were influenced really know, and they may not even know it themselves. Maybe they just liked the Scorpions as well as other bands and picked up an instrument and learned to play, maybe it was the genre that influenced them and not any particular band.

Your argument about the relevance of the Scorpions could be applied to a lot of bands and artists that are already inducted.

To me, what it boils down to is the Hall of Lame is just that. Getting further and further from inducting true iconic rock legends to putting in meaningless pop bands and artists that don't even know what rock music is, and I don't think the Rock Hall Committee has either for a long time.

Are the Scorpions worthy, in my opinion yes, but that's just my opinion, which is really what all of this is. I hate the fact that those asshole nominating committee members have the last say in who gets in and who doesn't. The people have decided what bands are great and what bands are not and that is all that matters. Screw the Rock and Roll Hall of LAME!

Quite true on all accounts. When it comes to the Scorpions, I guess it boils down to the fact that I don't immediately think of them when someone mentions metal. I'm not sure anyone's willing to place them above GNR, Metallica, Def Lep, etc. In my own personal pantheon, I don't instinctively recall them right away, yet I'll always recall an act like Motley Crue, whom some might think lesser than the Scorps. Kind of odd that way.

As I said, I wouldn't start screaming about how the sky is falling if they were elected.

Posted by Cheesecrop on Thursday, 11.12.09 @ 03:12am

What is going on? There are so many great rock bands that haven't got in and probably never will while Madonna gets in rock n roll hall of fame, all those country, pop,and jazz bands got in rock n roll hall of fame... why is it called -Rock- n -Roll- hall of fame then?! SCORPIONS are one of the most successful rock bands since 1972!! They are my favorite band forever! I'm sick of all this selflessness everywhere, sorry.

Innovation? Not much. I know they do have at least a bit of influence (Kirk Hammett of Metallica is always singing the praises of Michael Schenker), and they did help put Germany on the popular music map, so they have Impact. They are huge in Europe, I know. I could be swayed to say yes, but there are a lot of Hard Rock acts who deserve it more (Deep Purple, Thin Lizzy, Iron Maiden, to name a few.)

Wind of change = good, but the rest...

NO

Posted by Sam on Sunday, 08.29.10 @ 04:59am

Who says its only wind of change? Rock you like hurricane, still loving you, none like you are the same popular. Also, send me an angel is well known and there are so many others like blackout or big city nights.
1)the fact that you like only wind of change it doesnt mean that the rest of the world does too.
2)Scorpions are more popular than half of the artists in the hall of fame.

Sad news to here that these guys are calling it a day after this tour in 2013. I can't wait to get stung again RRHOF please here us cry Hail hail and rock you like likea hurricane baby yeah !!!
:p \m/

Scorpions have always been one of the most underrated rock bands of all time....for music novices they sadly get lumped into cheesey hair bands form the 80's ....listen to lonesome crow from the 70's and keep listening to sting on tail 40 yrs later ....they almost have no equal for longevity and quality --their live shows still remain amazing after 40 yrs..Very few bands in rock and roll hall of fame can compare....It's a travesty and egregios they are NOT in RR hall at the top of the bill --NOT going to visit that lame place again until they are inducted....

Posted by Ryan on Wednesday, 12.15.10 @ 11:57am

Sam, you said that Maiden had to be inducted before the Scorps. As someone after you said, Scorpions were one of the most important influences on the Heavy Metal scene, Maiden included, go listen to "He's a Woman, She's a Man" to uderstand that metal wasn't born with Maiden ;)
By The Way, you should know that Dickinson paid homage to the Scorps covering "The Zoo".

Posted by Mick on Sunday, 03.13.11 @ 16:51pm

"The Zoo", yes that was a great song. I did not say metal began with Maiden, just that I'd like to see Maiden in first. Others as well, though there is a strong case for the Scorps to be inducted.

Posted by Sam on Monday, 03.21.11 @ 10:57am

Germany needs some representation in the Hall as well. Scorpions, Kraftwerk and Can should all get in to properly represent Germany. We need to diversify the representation of the Hall away from the US, Canada and England. We can discuss specifics if you like.

Posted by Sam on Monday, 03.21.11 @ 11:30am

Sam, I'm curious, from which other countries than the ones who currently have inductees would you consider as having candidates with strong enough credentials?

Posted by Tahvo Parvianen on Monday, 03.21.11 @ 11:48am

Well... Ireland is represented by U2 (Van Morrison is from Northern Ireland), which isn't very much... I'd like to see Thin Lizzy and The Pogues in as well. I'm still not sure about Donovan, but I'd like to see him in if only for Scotland to get some representation (I think The Jesus & Mary Chain and Cocteau Twins have done enough to get in, and Primal Scream are a borderline candidate if only because Screamadelica was a monumental force in acid house, but none of them have any shot of getting in). As discussed, Scorpions have a strong case to be made, but the most ridiculous German omission is Kraftwerk, though neither are getting in anytime soon. Can as well. Toots & the Maytals for Jamaica, as they were one of the originals in reggae. AC/DC's in for Australia... that is the concession. However they only formed in Australia: The Youngs and Bon Scott were sons of Scottish immigrants, and Brian Johnson's from Newcastle. As far as Australia's concerned, you could make a case for INXS, though theirs is a borderline one, at least as far as the good old I&I is concerned. I'd still like to see them in, though; what can I say, I like their sound. That's it off the top of my head... do you have any?

Posted by Sam on Tuesday, 03.22.11 @ 13:48pm

Why should we give a rats ass what country a band is from?

If a band is good enough to make it on their own merit (and the Scorps have one of the strongest cases out there), then let 'em in. If they don't, they don't.

Geography is just a way to cherry pick undeserving acts and force them in. I mean, I'm a big Rammstein fan, but a paucity of German acts doesn't suddenly make them Hall of Famers any more than it does David Hasselhoff - or Kraftwerk for that matter.

Posted by Ralph on Tuesday, 03.22.11 @ 14:49pm

As far as german abnds I'd rather see Can, Kraftwerk or Neu get in just to get Krautrock done.

Posted by GFW on Tuesday, 03.22.11 @ 14:55pm

Though Ralph's right that the Hall has no quotas or anything on nationalities, there's actually not a whole lot of really deserving candidates I can name off of the top of my head that Sam and GFW haven't already mentioned. But to answer your question, Sam, of those who may have a shot I can think of Karlheinz Stockhausen (who should go in as an early influence), Rolf-Ulrich Kaiser (who may have a case as a non-performer), and Bjork (though she's still not eligible)

Posted by Tahvo Parvianen on Wednesday, 03.23.11 @ 03:22am

Then of course there's some acts who may have enough credentials to give them something of a shot (Like Fela Kuti and Serge Gainsbourg for example), I know Johnny Hallyday's actually been considered, and some who have zero chance (see Crowded House, A-ha, Aphrodite's Child, etc)

Posted by Tahvo Parvianen on Wednesday, 03.23.11 @ 03:28am

Oh and there's always Nazareth too, if you wanna get more Scottish rockers in, but they pretty much have zero chance of ever getting in.

Posted by Tahvo Parvianen on Wednesday, 03.23.11 @ 03:29am

Is 'Kraut Rock' an actual genre? I know it sounds catchy, but is that a form of music that needs to have representatives in the Hall?

Posted by Paul in KY on Wednesday, 03.23.11 @ 06:37am

Paul, since wikipedia has done the work for me already and neatly summarized krautrock, I'll post some of what they have on it:

"Krautrock is a generic name for the experimental music scene that appeared in Germany in the late 1960s and gained popularity throughout the 1970s, especially in Britain. BBC DJ John Peel in particular is largely credited with spreading the reputation of krautrock outside of the German-speaking world."

"Krautrock is an eclectic and often very original mix of post-psychedelic jamming and moody progressive rock mixed with ideas from contemporary experimental classical music and from the new experimental directions that emerged in jazz during the 1960s and 1970s. Moving away from the patterns of song structure and melody of much rock music in America and Britain, some in the movement also drove the music to a more mechanical and electronic sound. The key component characterizing the groups gathered under the term is the synthesis of rock and roll rhythm and energy with a decided will to distance themselves from specifically American blues origins, but to draw on German or other sources instead. Jean-Herve Peron of Faust says: 'We were trying to put aside everything we had heard in rock n roll, the three-chord pattern, the lyrics. We had the urge of saying something completely different.'"

"Krautrock was highly influential on the development of post-punk, notably artists such as The Fall and This Heat. By the late 1990s and early 2000s, with the resurgence of electronic music and a new generation rediscovering much of the early German music, krautrock came to be considered a style in and of itself. Artists such as Stereolab, The Mars Volta, Deerhunter, Wilco, Laika, Mouse on Mars, Bowery Electric, I Am Spoonbender, Tortoise, Coil, and Fujiya & Miyagi working under the post-rock and electronica rubrics have often cited bands in the krautrock canon as being among their more significant influences."

Hope that answers your question.

Posted by Tahvo Parvianen on Monday, 03.28.11 @ 07:29am

Of course, all that isn't to say experimental electronic music didn't happen at all before krautrock appeared. Take for instance Silver Apples, the duo from New York or the Red Krayola, from Houston. Both legendary for being ahead of their time and both criminally underrated.

Posted by Tahvo Parvianen on Monday, 03.28.11 @ 07:33am

Tahvo, thanks for the writeup. It sounds like it is an actual genre & should probably have a rep (or 2) in the Hall at some point.

Will have to listen to some.

Posted by Paul in KY on Tuesday, 03.29.11 @ 07:44am

Kraftwerk might be the most well-known of those bands, and they have probably the most water-tight case in terms of the good old I&I. Important to post-punk, synth-pop/rock/music, electronica, hip-hop, techno and acid house. They were nominated back in 2003 but haven't made it since, so I think their window of opportunity has unfortunately passed. They were inducted into Revisited/Projected, as were Can. I'm not too familiar with it either, Paul, but I know it's fairly difficult and inaccessible, so it'll probably take a few listens to sink in. Here's what AllMusic has to say:

"Kraut Rock refers to the legions of German bands of the early '70s that expanded the sonic possibilities of art and progressive rock. Instead of following in the direction of their British and American counterparts, who were moving toward jazz and classical-based compositions and concept albums, the German bands became more mechanical and electronic. Working with early synthesizers and splicing together seemingly unconnected reels of tape, bands like Faust, Can, and Neu created a droning, pulsating sound that owed more to the avant garde than to rock & roll. Although the bands didn't make much of an impact while they were active in the '70s, their music anticipated much post-punk of the early '80s, particularly industrial rock. Kraut rock also came into vogue in the '90s, when groups like Stereolab and Tortoise began incorporating the hypnotic rhythms and electronic experiments of the German art-rock bands into their own, vaguely avant-garde indie rock."

It might sound generic to call it the German take on prog, but in basic terms that's what it was.

Sam, appreciate your comments. I'm gonna get that Can album 'Future Days' or maybe something by Neu! & check it out.

they should be inducted 14 years ago i mean why are they being ignored? some people say because thier lyrics are cheap! wake up people they are germans they do their best singing in english and their music is like no other totally off the hook. and they are preforming for over 35 years

It's not a matter of the Scorpions being someone's favorite band or their catalog of hit songs...it's a matter of music legacy. Schenker, Meine and company were not only a key part of the 1980s metal scene, but one of the founding alumni. The band was formed before Zeppelin was even a notion in Jimmy Page's mind. While the Scorpions took some time in their early years to develop their sound - and never really gained ongoing mainstream popularity - their influence today is every bit as important (if not moreso) than other Hair Hands given airplay on MTV.

I want to give the R&RHOF credit, guessing that they are steeped in research for preparing and recognizing a place for each deserving act from the past - but c'mon folks - this is a no-brainer.

Matthias Jabs of Scorpions and Jon Anderson of Yes have the same birthday, October 25. The chord progression of "Send Me An Angel" the final track on the Scorps' "Crazy World" album is strongly reminiscent of Yes' "Changes" from "90125" Klaus Meine has always admired Yes' work.

They are more famous all around the world than most in the HOF list.
They have recorded so many great metal, hard, slow rock songs which can be found in many listeners list.(I dont need to mention the songs cause the list is very long)
They have sold more than 100m records.
They have toured in front of sell out audience all around the world and mostly are not small sellouts.
They have been enshrined in the HOLLYWOOD WALK OF FAME even.
They have done so many humanitarian work.

What else do you need to induct them HOF?

Posted by MusicFan on Tuesday, 12.27.11 @ 06:32am

you need to be mediocre and without talent, that's what they seem to search for the induction. Alice Cooper was only inducted last year (was a big surprise, he deserved to be there long time ago, just like Scorps and many others still outside), but many crappy pop/rap bands are in, this seems more like a hall of shame.

"you need to be mediocre and without talent, that's what they seem to search for the induction" - Gig

Like I said before my comment got cleared up in the big clean-up earlier today, anybody who claims you have to be "mediocre" to get into the Hall has no credibility. After all, it might be news to you, but this same Hall you claim sucks so much is also the Hall that has inducted Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Queen, Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Marley, R.E.M. etc.

Still think the Hall is only populated by "crappy pop/rap" bands now?

Posted by Tahvo Parvianen on Friday, 02.10.12 @ 17:12pm

Tahvo, I mentioned Alice Cooper and Scorpions in my post, so I thought it would be obvious to consider exceptions the real legends you named. I was talking about the rap/pop shit in the Hall, that has more names in than the real rock legends inside and outside the RRHF.

Posted by Gig on Friday, 02.10.12 @ 17:38pm

ok Gig, fair enough.

By the way, don't misunderstood me, I'm hardly defending the Hall I just hate it when people start pretending that they ONLY induct crap (for the record I disagree with calling the current rap and pop inductees crap since they could have done much worse. I do however, have my own personal list of Hall inductees we could've done without)

Posted by Tahvo Parvianen on Saturday, 02.11.12 @ 03:11am

dude, there's like, three rap acts in so I don't know what you're whining about.

Posted by GFW on Saturday, 02.11.12 @ 09:11am

To me the HOF has been one of the most negative things in music of the last 25 years. As I've stated several times, the purpose is to alienate people, to brainwash audiences and all media. Suddenly all artists already in the HOF is "yeah, great, they were huge influence, they had an amazing amount of albums, singles, they played so great music, etc" while artists not included aren't even worth mentioning or listening to. That's the purpose of HOF, Rolling Stone, etc. Surely there's plenty of lobby, money all around...

They induct Guns N' Roses but no Deep Purple, Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, Kiss, etc?
They induct Metallica but no Scorpions, Motörhead, Iron Maiden, etc?
They induct Genesis and Floyd but no Yes, Rush, King Crimson, ELP, Jethro Tull, etc?

Don't get surprised if within' a few years we'll see Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, and then Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera...

Posted by Renegade on Friday, 04.6.12 @ 13:23pm

dude, the hall of fame isn't some massive conspiracy. jann wenner didn't cause 9/11 or anything.

Posted by GFW on Friday, 04.6.12 @ 13:48pm

Listen... These guys should be in, but I imagine the snobs who make the decisions don't understand. To the comments of their weak lyrics... No, they were never Bob Dylan or Jackson Brown... But they wrote lyrics in a different language than their own. In the early years they actually learned English as they wrote, so... Look, talk to people who saw them. Ask the record store owners and, even, talk to other musicians. They, along with Deep Purple, DIO, Sabbath and Zeplin, invented hard rock music.
Just my oppinion. Don't really care anymore. I think most of the besy bands will not be there in Cleveland any time soon. I don't need them to be. I think most of their fans don't need them to be. Just like great bands who followed will be ignored as well.
To the so called Rock n Roll Hall of Fame:The True Rockers don't need you!!!

Please let Scorpions in! I saw them in '79 and again in 2012 and they rocked just as hard! They have influenced many bands and have always delivered awesome Heavy Metal music. There isn't a song I don't like. They deserve it. They've worked hard for it. Thank you!

Posted by Michelle Gallagher on Saturday, 05.25.13 @ 15:24pm

And the sting continues...they have not stopped and here it is 2013. This band amazes as they are the ONLY band out of all of them since the 70s who have never stopped rawkin all these decades! They still tour, still cut studio albums, and still rawk as great as ever. Where is the respect this band so richly deserves over most? Let's get with it and give them the kudos they have worked for all these years.

Now that KISS has been inducted, I would put Scorpions at the top of the list who should be inducted next.

Love Klaus Meine's voice & the high notes he can hit. One of the best Heavy Metal voices ever.Period. It's amazing that the band started in the 60's & could make something as brilliant as Unbreakable in 2000's in their 50's.

All Scorpions & music fans know the hits:No One Like You,Rock You Like A Hurricane,The Zoo,Wind of Change,Big City Nights,Still Loving You,Send Me An Angel, etc.
Scorpions score high on most RRHOF criteria:Influence,Innovation,Longevity,CD sales... Can't think of many bands better belonging to Hall than the Scorpions . These guys are legends!!! Scorpions Hall of Fame 2015!!! Scorpions fans let's start now. KING

Posted by KING on Tuesday, 01.28.14 @ 19:10pm

Scorpions should be inducted soon. Incredible longevity & good music. When they started out Martin Luther King Jr,Robert Kennedy,Jimmy Hendrix & Jim Morrison all were still alive . Imagine that.

These guys are excellent musicians who had the magical hit Rock You Like A Hurricane. It's played everywhere from radio to NFL stadiums every week. Incredible influence.

Only thing hurting Scorpions is they didn't have that 1 Thriller or Led Zeppelin IV Classic CD that sold 25 or 30. Million CD's. I've seen people say they won't but they sold 75 million CD's worldwide. Somebody's buying. KING

Scorpions are heavy metal royalty. They would be perfect candidate for Veterans RRHOF Committee since they started in Mid 60's. Influenced many European heavy metal bands. Rock You Like A Hurricane an epic song lives on in 2014!!! Should have been inducted 5 years ago. KING

Posted by KING on Sunday, 05.25.14 @ 14:42pm

Saw Scorps at 5 Season Center in Cedar Rapids Iowa when Bon Jovi warmed up for them. Crowd actually BOOOO'D Bon Jovi for really bad singing and the Scorps came on with a lot of anticipation and KILL'D IT! Vote YES for Scorps in the HOF!!

Posted by jonas on Wednesday, 08.20.14 @ 21:04pm

The Scorpions, just like most huge heavy metal acts from the 80s will never make the RRHOF. My reasoning:
1. The "Rock and Roll" Hall of Fame has nothing to do with rock and roll anymore. They don't deserve to even use the name "Rock and Roll." If they want to change their name to "The Music Hall of Fame", I am all down for that.
2. Unlike the Grammy's (which is run by absolutely clueless people when it comes to hard rock and metal), the RRHOF is purposely snubbing bands like the Scorpions, Iron Maiden, and Judas Priest and they are fully aware of it.

Posted by fork80 on Thursday, 01.15.15 @ 13:33pm

The Scorpions are up there with the best bands of all time. Klaus still has an awesome voice. The Scorpions were true MONSTERS OF ROCK! They're still going while others are trying to catch up. The Scorpions should definitely be inducted!

Scorpions should have been 1st ballot RRHOF. They are better than 70% of the bands elected and rocked harder than most. They should have been in with Rock You Like A Hurricane ,The Zoo, Wind Of Change and an array of great sounds and songs.Vocally Klaus blows away most competition with Heavenly range. The live concerts are outstanding and Jabs w orking the squawk box on The Zoo is masterful. There are no holes in The Scorpions RRHOF resume since they influenced many European metal bands that came later and had the longevity and critical success /acclaim needed to make RTRHOF. Deep and Dark excellent song later Scorpions. Just simply the best. KING

Wind of Change show the depth of their talent as musicians starting as a softer song and building to a brilliant solo and heavier near the end.
