Lee Dorsey was considered many years ago, he should be given another shot. He was one of the great icons of the New Orleans soul/funk/blues r&b scene. He teamed often with The Meters and songs of Allen Touissant.
FRL: Dorsey's "essential" songs should be among others:

Ya Ya
Working In The Coal Mine
(above two were hit songs)
Get Out Of My Life, Woman
(later also done by Paul Butterfield)
Yes We Can
(later done by Pointer Sisters)
Ride Your Pony
Holy Cow

Lee Dorsey rates another shot.
