Jonathan Richman not only played a seminal role as a frontman to the Modern Lovers, he has also written hundreds of songs, many of great lyrical wit. He has explored various world musics and sung convincingly in several languages, including Spanish and French; and, in that way, has brought an openness of spirit to American music. Richman has performed countless shows and his rock'n'roll spirit always shines through. When I saw him in Buffalo, NY, in 1999 he performed with a percussionist playing a snare and hi-hat. He wore no shoes, and his amp looked like a tiny bedside practice amp. Admission cost less than a single beer. When the sizeable crowd started getting loud with drink and conversation and someone shouted "Turn it up!," Richman retorted, "I have a mic, and I can hear you fine, so you should be able to hear me." He then resumed his set at the same measured volume. This had the unanticipated but very rock'n'roll effect of getting people to refocus on the music. Richman's spontaneity and generosity are legendary. He's a free and original songwriter whose songs inspire cheerfulness and hilarity. His induction can only increase his public exposure and help to preserve his joyful music.
