FOLK ICONS from the 50s and 60s who are in The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame:

Lead Belly
Woody Guthrie
Pete Seeger
Bob Dylan

Joan Baez and Leonard Cohen belong in the Rock Hall with that group of artists!

How is she not already in? She is a pioneer of the folk scene, and one of a small number of females in a mostly boys club.

This woman has influenced socially-committed rock and roll like no other performer. There is no excuse for her exclusion. And I come from Cleveland! Go Joanie!

8 gold albums, 1 gold single, 50 years at the top of her profession, sang at Woodstock, sang at Live Aid, sang and accompanied MLK at the historic march on Washington, trailblazer for women in the music industry, numerous awards and accolades, Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award............... Well I think she might at least be put up for consideration!

Joan is an amazing performer, song writer and social critic. Her albums were constantly brilliant even into the new millennium. Along with Bob Dylan and only a handful others, she made folk/rock history. She is highly respected by those in her profession as being a pioneer, but she is so much more than just that. She is a visionary, an entertainer and one of the most beautiful voices I have ever heard. Judy Collins? YES! Joni Mitchell? YES! BUT MOST DESERVING OF ALL IS JOAN BAEZ.

Joan Baez qualifies to be inducted into the Rock Hall in the main performer category. She's not that old. She's been eligable since 86 (the first rock hall ceremony). She won't be inducted in the early influence or lifetime achievement category. She will be inducted in the main performer category, just as Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen and Jon Mitchell were, and Judy Collins, Peter, Paul & Mary and The Kingston Trio will be.

Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger were inducted in the early influence category.

How can Joan Baez NOT be in the Rock Hall? She rocks! She's a legend and an icon. She has the voice of a century. She's been performing and recording for 50 years and is still relevant. She has brought joy and hope and peace to millions around the globe, has been an ardent supporter of civil and human rights and has used her voice tirelessly to support good causes! Though she never sang "rock and roll", per se, Joan Baez was the first serious female musician of the rock and roll era, releasing her first album in 1960, during the age of bubblegum and tinsel, and having it nonetheless go gold. Every strong, independent-minded female musician to come after her, from Janis Joplin to Emmylou Harris, from Sheryl Crowe to Melissa Etheridge, owes their career to Baez. It's astonishing that she isn't in, while many of those whom she influenced are!

The Rock Hall's logic:

They need to induct Laura Nyro before inducting Joan Baez and Judy Collins.

Read her Bio on Wiki and you have to wonder how Joan Baez could not be in the R&R Hall of Fame. Dylan and Baez created a whole movement with folk / protest songs that are as powerful today as they were in the 60's. Along with Judy Collins, Carol King and Joni Mitchell; Joan Baez is one of the four most important female singers of the 60's and 70's. Her "Diamonds and Rust" album was brilliant. She has'nt quit either, the work she has done in the past two decades has been some of her best. Including her last album in 2008. Joan Baez should be the next to be inducted.

Joan should be in

Posted by Happy on Saturday, 02.18.12 @ 21:36pm

Hell no!

Anyone who is familiar with my stance on the whiny folk singers of the 1960s should know why I oppose Joan Baez's induction into the RRHOF. Anyone who uses their music as a bully pulpit for their propagandistic views (see also Phil Ochs, Rage Against the Machine, Toby Keith, Ted Nugent, and anyone else stupid enough to ride to con-servative/lie-bral train) should be persona non grata. Musically speaking, there ain't nothing special about Joan Baez; an overbearing voice, sappy lyrics, and a pansy guitar disqualify her. The RRHOF should instead consider female musicians who can actually rock and stick to making music, like Joan Jett and Pat Benatar.

I know I'm fond of making statements like this, but Joan Baez's music is so dated, Kate Smith sounds contemporary by comparison.

I like Joan Jet an Pat
But Joan Baez is also great!
She should of been in years ago Lots of folk musicians are in

How can we ever forget her. These early folk singers sang what was going on...

50 Years Later: Voices of the March on Washington. I think Joan Baez will be nominated soon.

When asked on twitter if Phil Ochs, Joan Baez, Judy Collins, Peter, Paul and Mary and the Kingston Trio should be inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, Robert Hilburn responded:

I think Joan Baez is long overdue for rock hall of fame induction...she helped open the way for rock as social force.

I guess this means he doesn't support inductions for Phil Ochs, Judy Collins, Peter, Paul and Mary and the Kingston Trio.

Joan Baez

Eligible since: 1985

Argument for induction: Joan Baez was there (at just 19 years old, no less) at the first Newport Folk Festival in 1959, marched with Martin Luther King Jr. for civil rights, was the face of the early Sixties folk boom introduced Bob Dylan to the masses and, with 1975's Diamonds & Rust, composed a classic title track that was subsequently covered by no less than Judas Priest. Baez was a force vocally, musically and politically amidst a male-dominated folk scene, and remains striking talent today.

I think it's a shame that so many don't know the true history of rock music or music in general and it's obvious neither do those that have a position of power in these matters. How can I say this because if they did Joan Baez would be in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. Rock music is a rebels call and no one in the industries history was or is that more than her. Willing to stand alone or united she always stood for what she believe to be right, in the face of ignorance or misguided patriotism, willing to be kicked,spat-on,thrown in jail, or even have bombs dropped on her while recording an album. She took on the beliefs of Gandhi marched with Dr. King and Cesar Chavez and took on so many of the worlds injustices. As person she is my hero dedicating her life to the cause of peace. That's just a small back drop to her music career, for the pure beauty of her voice she should be in the Hall fame and though she did'not write most of the songs she recorded, her interpretations are stellar and you'll be hard press to find anyone that can pick a guitar as well. Yes Rolling Stone magazine almost got it right naming Bob Dylan the second greatest artist of all time but totally blew it on the best Dylan covers of all time leaving Baez off the list. I guess they never heard her perform Forever Young,Blow'n In the Wind,Love Is Just A Four Letter Word and in my humble opinion the greatest love song of all time Sad Eye Lady Of The Lowlands as performed by Miss Baez. Two of her few songs she did pen (Diamonds and Rust) and (Sweet Sir Galahad) place her artistically far above those inducted on popularity, though as often with the passing of time history is rewritten and few remember just how well know she was world wide and though not the voice of a generation she was the backbone or you could say the boots on the ground. So as it goes with a corporate run media nation passing off scum like Ronald Reagan as a hero and erasing a history based on facts, you know like the Nixon tapes,I give the Hall little respect until the halve have the balls of Joan Baez and induct her.

My passion got the best of me once again. Maybe because it was my first time commenting on any site though I'm considering a Toad Man blog to boast my stinky opinions. I meant to say half the balls, only if I did I would be a better man. Hey let's get Leonard Cohen in also.

Posted by Toad Man on Saturday, 12.20.14 @ 17:51pm

You would think she is one of those artists the Rock Hall would be in a mad rush to induct.

Posted by Roy on Monday, 04.25.16 @ 22:06pm

I believe that Joan Baez has not been inducted yet because she's a woman. The music she's created and her social activities are comparable to many men who are her peers and many were inducted years ago.

Once again, rock and roll is presenting itself as "a bad boys' club" and most women who aren't "hell-raisers" or "pin up babes" aren't receiving the recognition of their peers. I believe that is cruelest cut of all.
