Both, Elton John and his lyricist, Bernie Taupin, were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1992, but only Elton John was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1994. This does not make any sense. If there was no Bernie Taupin, there wouldn't be an Elton John. Bernie Taupin needs to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as a lyricist in the "Non-performers" category. Bernie Taupin has also written lyrics for Rod Stewart, Alice Cooper, Melissa Manchester, Heart, Starship, and his own singing career, both as a solo artist and his late 1990s band, The Farm Dogs.

Elton John and Rod Stewart are the only musicians in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame who Bernie Taupin has written for. Hopefully Alice Cooper and Heart will be next!

Bernie Taupin's prolific work though with Elton John alone should qualify him for the Rock Hall!

Send your letters to the Rock Hall explaining why Bernie Taupin belongs in the Rock Hall!

Remember to mention "Lyricist" & "Non-Performers" category.

By the way, Jann Wenner hates Elton John, but Elton John got in to the Rock Hall! Jann Wenner hates Chicago too! They are not in yet! Bernie will have a hard time!

Singer-Songwriter and Pianist Elton John and his songwriting partner, Lyricist Bernie Taupin, were both inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1992, but only Elton John was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1994. This does not make any sense whatsoever. If there had not been a Bernie Taupin, there would not have been an Elton John and vice versa. Their music was a collaborative effort. Bernie Taupin should have been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame back in 1994 as a Lyricist in the Non-Performers category, the same year that Elton John was inducted.

Bernie Taupin didn’t just write lyrics exclusively for Elton John. Bernie Taupin also wrote the lyrics for songs performed and recorded by Ringo Starr, Rod Stewart, Cher, Alice Cooper, Melissa Manchester, Derringer, The Motels, Starship, Heart, Animotion, John Waite, Martin Page, and Peter Cetera, as well as for his own singing career, both as a solo artist and as a member of his own late-1990s Country-Western band, The Farm Dogs.

Elton John and Bernie Taupin comprise one of the longest running and most successful songwriting teams of all time. Bernie Taupin’s 40 years of collaborative work with Elton John alone should unquestionably qualify him for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Please induct Lyricist Bernie Taupin into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in the Non-Performers category. His induction is long overdue.

BERNIE TAUPIN TIMELINE

May 22, 1950: Bernard John Taupin, a.k.a. Bernie Taupin, is born in Lincolnshire, England.

June 23, 1967: Elton John answers an ad placed by Liberty Records in Britain’s ‘New Musical Express,’ thereby setting in motion a chain of events that will result in his teaming up with lyricist Bernie Taupin, his lifetime songwriting collaborator.

June 3, 1969: ‘Empty Sky,’ Elton John’s first album, is released in England. It will not be released in the U.S. until 1975, when John is a bonafide superstar.

August 25, 1970: Elton John makes his performing debut in America at Los Angeles’ Troubadour nightclub.

January 23, 1971: Elton John reaches #8 with “Your Song.” It is the first in a string of 60 hit singles for John over the next three decades.

February 3, 1973: Elton John’s “Crocodile Rock” hits #1. It is the first of a half dozen chart-topping singles for John over the next three years.

April 13, 1974: Elton John hits #1 with “Bennie and the Jets,” a tribute to R&B music from ‘Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.’ “When I first heard ‘Bennie and the Jets,’ I knew I had to be a performer,” Axl Rose (of Guns ‘n’ Roses) would say in his 1994 speech inducting John into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

April 12, 1975: Elton John hits #1 with “Philadelphia Freedom,” a song inspired by his friendship with tennis superstar Billie Jean King, whose pro team is the Philadelphia Freedoms.

November 1, 1975: Elton John hits #1 with “Island Girl,” from ‘Rock of the Westies,’ his seventh consecutive #1 album.

August 7, 1976: “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart,” by Elton John and Kiki Dee, tops the charts for the first of four weeks. It is John’s sixth #1 hit in three years – and his last one in the U.S. for 21 years.

November 16, 1985: Starship hits #1 with the song “We Built This City”, written by Bernie Taupin and Martin Page.
March 22, 1986: Heart hits #1 with the song “These Dreams”, written by Bernie Taupin and Martin Page.

June 23, 1990: “Sacrifice,” from the album ‘Sleeping With the Past,’ becomes Elton John’s first-ever #1 hit in his British homeland.

February 1, 1992: George Michael and Elton John’s live performance of “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down On Me at Wembley Stadium hits #1. The original Elton John version had previously hit #2 in 1974.

February 18, 1993: Elton John’s album ‘The One’ becomes the first to receive multi-platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Previously, albums were only certified gold (500,000 copies sold) or platinum (1,000,000 copies sold).

April 3, 1993: Elton John’s “Simple Life,” from his 1992 album ‘The One,’ enters Billboard’s Top Forty. With this charting single, John breaks Elvis Presley’s longstanding record with 24 consecutive years of Top Forty hits.

January 19, 1994: Elton John is inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at the ninth annual induction dinner. Axl Rose, of Guns and Roses, is his presenter.

October 2, 1997: It is announced that “Candle in the Wind 1997,” Elton John’s tribute to the late Princess Diana, has shipped more than 26 million units worldwide, making it the second biggest single in history (behind Bing Crosby’s “White Christmas”). It tops the U.S. charts for 14 weeks.

I'm jumping the gun here a little...

When Bernie Taupin finally gets inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame as a lyricist in the non-performers category, do any of you think that anyone other than Elton John giving the induction speech for Bernie Taupin, would be insane? Should anyone other than Elton John perform for Bernie Taupin? If not Elton John, who do you think would be the appropriate choice to give the speech and perform for Bernie Taupin? Should it be a predecessor, a contemporary, or a follower? Which songs would you want performed? It's usually 2 songs per inductee. Which song would you want playing while Bernie Taupin is walking up to the stage to take his trophy and give his speech?

Here are my choices:

Induction Speech: Elton John

Song that plays while Bernie Taupin is walking up to the stage: Philadelphia Freedom

Performance: Elton John or Billy Joel

2 Songs: Your Song and Rocket Man, or, Levon and Tiny Dancer

This year, the 2008 Rock Hall ceremony opened up with Patti LaBelle performing "If You Don't Know Me By Now" for the non-performers category inductees, Gamble & Huff.

The opening performance in the year Bernie Taupin is inducted should be Tina Turner singing "The Btch Is Back." Maybe Billy Joel doing Bennie and the Jets?

If Bernie Taupin's music is chosen for the all-star jam at the end of the ceremony: Saturday Nights Alright For Fighting, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.

I got a response from the Rock Hall!:

Thanks for your comments about Bernie Taupin. He is certainly a good choice.

Our Nominating Committee members are very much aware of Mr. Taupin's accomplishments. As a writer, he would fall under the Non-Performer category which is done by a separate committee.

Terry Stewart is on this committee.

Look for Bernie Taupin to be inducted in 2009!

Elton John was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in 1994, but his first album was released in the U.S. in 1970. That's not 25 years. I guess they counted his first album from 1969 which was originally released only in the U.K., but that's still not 25 years after. He should have been inducted in 1995 or 1996, not 1994.

BERNIE TAUPIN NEEDS TO BE INDUCTED INTO THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME AS A LYRICIST IN THE NON-PERFORMERS CATEGORY. THIS IS A MUST. IT'S THE ONLY OTHER HALL OF FAME THAT IS REALLY NECESSARY FOR BERNIE TAUPIN TO BE INDUCTED INTO IN THE U.S.

I'M SURPRISED THAT ELTON JOHN HAS NOT PUSHED FOR BERNIE TAUPIN TO BE INDUCTED. I'M PRETTY SURE HE COULD MAKE IT HAPPEN ALL BY HIMSELF IF HE SPOKE TO THE PEOPLE AT THE ROCK HALL. ELTON AND BERNIE MAY NOT CARE ABOUT THE HALLS OF FAME, BUT THE FANS DO, AND THE FANS WANT BERNIE TAUPIN TO BE INDUCTED INTO THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME AS A LYRICIST IN THE NON-PERFORMERS CATEGORY BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE!

Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff were inducted because Kenny Gamble's nephew kept on pushing and pushing!

If Gamble & Huff are in the Rock Hall, Bernie Taupin should be in there as well. Tell Elton John's manager to get Elton John to help induct Bernie Taupin.

Taupin has often claimed that a song should never take more than a half-hour to write. His first classic took all of 10 minutes. In 1969, Taupin and John were sharing a bunk bed at Elton's mom's house when Taupin wrote the words to "Your Song" one morning at the breakfast table. The soaring piano ballad would become the breakthrough single that introduced John to America. Although John insisted that the song was inspired by an old girlfriend of Taupin's, the lyricist maintains that it was aimed at no one in particular. "The early ones were not drawn from experience but imagination," Taupin said. " 'Your Song' could only have been written by a 17-year-old who'd never been laid in his life."

# 245 ROCKET MAN - PAGE 76

A perfect song for the age of moonwalks, this star trek was the elegiac tale of an astronaut lost in space, light-years from home. Taupin wrote it on the way to visiting his own family. "I got inside," he said, "and had to rush to write it all down before I'd forgotten it." Taupin was accused of ripping off Bowie's "Space Oddity," but he was actually thinking of "Rocket Man," by acid-folkies Pearls Before Swine.

# 356 CANDLE IN THE WIND - PAGE 92

John's Marilyn Monroe tribute was a U.K. hit in 1973, but in the U.S. the single release was cancelled when DJs began playing "Bennie and the Jets" instead. A live version with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra recorded in 1986 finally reached the U.S. charts, and a 1997 release with new lyrics in honor of Princess Diana became the biggest-selling single of the 20th Century.

# 390 GOODBYE YELLOW BRICK ROAD - PAGE 99

Inspired by the Rolling Stones' Goats Head Soup, John and lyricist Taupin went to Kingston, Jamaica, to record John's sixth album. "The studio was surrounded by barbed wire," said Taupin, "and there were guys with machine guns." Too scared to leave their hotel, the duo wrote 21 songs in three days, including "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road."

# 397 TINY DANCER - PAGE 100

Lyricist Taupin wrote this 1971 song about his first wife, Maxine Feibelman, who really was a seamstress for John's band and obviously did marry a music man. John's skyrocketing melody got a little help from Paul Buckmaster's strings and from Rick Wakeman, soon to join prog-rockers Yes, who played organ. "Tiny Dancer" was revived in the 2000 film Almost Famous.

I don't see how anyone can compare Elton John's Rocket Man to Rocket Man by Pearls Before Swine, or Space Oddity by David Bowie. The lyrics and the music are completely different! Maybe the idea was copied, but that's it!

Rocket Man by Elton John and Bernie Taupin

She packed my bags last night pre-flight
Zero hour nine a.m.
And I'm gonna be high as a kite by then
I miss the earth so much I miss my wife
It's lonely out in space
On such a timeless flight
And I think it's gonna be a long long time
Till touch down brings me round again to find
I'm not the man they think I am at home
Oh no no no I'm a rocket man
Rocket man burning out his fuse up here alone
Mars ain't the kind of place to raise your kids
In fact it's cold as h*ll
And there's no one there to raise them if you did
And all this science I don't understand
It's just my job five days a week
A rocket man, a rocket man
And I think it's gonna be a long long time...

Rocket Man by Pearls Before Swine

My father was a rocket man
He often went to Jupiter or Mercury, to Venus or to Mars
My mother and I would watch the sky
And wonder if a falling star
Was a ship becoming ashes with a rocket man inside

My mother and I
Never went out
Unless the sky was cloudy or the sun was blotted out
Or to escape the pain
We only went out when it rained

My father was a rocket man
He loved the world beyond the world, the sky beyond the sky
And on my mother's face, as lonely as the world in space
I could read the silent cry
That if my father fell into a star
We must not look upon that star again

My mother and I
Never went out
Unless the sky was cloudy or the sun was blotted out
Or to escape the pain
We only went out when it rained

Tears are often jewel-like
My mother's went unnoticed by my father, for his jewels were the stars
And in my father's eyes I knew he had to find
In the sanctity of distance something brighter than a star
One day they told us the sun had flared and taken him inside

My mother and I
Never went out
Unless the sky was cloudy or the sun was blotted out
Or to escape the pain
We only went out when it rained

Space Oddity by David Bowie

Ground control to major Tom
Ground control to major Tom
Take your protein pills and put your helmet on
(Ten) Ground control (Nine) to major Tom (Eight)
(Seven, six) Commencing countdown (Five), engines on (Four)
(Three, two) Check ignition (One) and may gods (Blastoff) love be with you

This is ground control to major Tom, you've really made the grade
And the papers want to know whose shirts you wear
Now it's time to leave the capsule if you dare

This is major Tom to ground control, I'm stepping through the door
And I'm floating in a most peculiar way
And the stars look very different today
Here am I floatin' 'round my tin can far above the world
Planet Earth is blue and there's nothing I can do

Though I'm past one hundred thousand miles, I'm feeling very still
And I think my spaceship knows which way to go
Tell my wife I love her very much, she knows
Ground control to major Tom, your circuits dead, there's something wrong
Can you hear me, major Tom?
Can you hear me, major Tom?
Can you hear me, major Tom?
Can you...
Here am I sitting in my tin can far above the Moon
Planet Earth is blue and there's nothing I can do
