Berry Gordy founded and ruled over one of the most successful records empires in rock and roll history, Motown.

As a young African-American working in troubled times, Berry reached across the color wall with music that would touch all people, no matter what skin color they were. Under his leadersihp, Motown became a example of African-American capitalism and pride and a musical warehouse for some of the greatest soul groups ever to grace the stage.

The list of Motown's stars include The Supremes, Marvin Gaye, The Four Tops, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, Stevie Wonder and Martha & The Vandellas. But the artists weren't the whole picture by any means. Motown's songwriting staff and house musicians contributed hugely to the Motown sound as well.

The plan of a self-contained operation showing quality for soul was all apart of Gordy's grand idea. After Motown's heyday, black music was never seen as a minority taste again. In taking a black idiom and making it the Sound of Young America, Berry Gordy and his talented group of cohorts made Motown unrivaled and untoppable.

Berry Gordy was nominated to be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2016, and he won, but he could not attend, so his induction was deferred for 2017. Peter Cetera should be given the same treatment. Defer Cetera for 2018.
