Chaka Khan was a member of Rufus. All the album covers said Rufus. Why were they nominated as Rufus with Chaka Khan? Still no explanation!!

It's a sneaky way to honor bolster Chaka Khan's solo career with her work with Rufus. Makes her case stronger, a la Small/Faces.

Read the short bio the Rock Hall release when Rufus was nominated. It's all about Chaka Khan: http://rockhall.com/pressroom/announcements/2012-nominees/

I guess this means Chaka Khan wouldn't get a second induction then. This is not the same as Small Faces/Faces. Rufus was a group, Chaka Khan is one person. Now the Rock Hall gets to rename groups? It's not Rufus, it's not Rufus/Chaka Khan, it's Rufus with Chaka Khan. This means not only will each member Rufus have their name on their trophy, but they will also have Chaka Khan's name on their trophy, and Chaka Khan's name will appear twice on her trophy.

Also, the members of Rufus did not perform on any of Chaka Khan's solo albums the way the members of Miami Sound Machine performed on all of Gloria Estefan's solo albums.

I have a feeling Chaka Khan is going to be inducted twice in 2016. Chaka Khan will be inducted in the main performers category and she'll be inducted as a member of Rufus in the musical excellence category. I think the Rock Hall will play that game!

Chaka should go in with Rufus....not alone.
Just who comes up with these bonehead ideas, anyway ?
Without Rufus, no one would have ever even HEARD of Chaka Khan. She would have just been Yvette Marie Stevens (her real name) of Chicago Illinois.
Sure , she has had solo hits, but it was her hits with Rufus was what originally brought her success..and made her solo career POSSIBLE in the FIRST place .
Why should they now be thrown under the bus to induct Chaka ALONE ??
It's the Smokey / Miracles issue ALL OVER AGAIN !!

I agree they should be 1

Chaka Khan's Rock Hall page says she's been nominated 3 times. They are counting her nomination with Rufus as the first. This doesn't look good for Rufus. They might not get another nomination. Maybe they'll induct them in the Musical Excellence category the same year that Chaka Khan gets inducted.

Rufus Featuring Chaka Khan (2017)
Chaka Khan (2015, 2016)

So why is Rufus more important than Kool & the Gang and the Commodores? KGC would give up to 15 more votes for Rufus. KG&C would actually get inducted on the first try.

Nominated as…

Rufus With Chaka Khan (2011)
Rufus Featuring Chaka Khan (2017, 2018)
Chaka Khan (2015, 2016)

So they got enough votes in 2017, to be nominated again in 2018. That's a good sign.

Posted by Roy on Sunday, 11/11/2018 @ 09:04am

The 6 surviving inducted members of Chicago are all definitely voting for Rufus/Chaka Khan, whom they've worked with on Rufus and Chicago albums, and are friends. Street Player was written by Chicago's drummer Danny Seraphine with David Wolinski of Rufus. Rufus recorded the song first, then Chicago covered it. Chaka Khan sang Feels Like Heaven with Peter Cetera on his 1992 World Falling Down album.

I hope they get inducted in 2019 just so it opens up a slot on the ballot for Kool & The Gang or The Commodores! But I don't know if the only reason they were nominated to begin with is because they have a woman in the group, and the first time they were nominated it was the year of the woman at the Rock Hall museum.

Posted by Roy on Monday, 11/12/2018 @ 08:52am

I really hope they get in this year. They will add 10 votes to the votes for War, The Meters, The Spinners, and The Marvelettes, because I don't think Kool & The Gang and The Commodores will be nominated until one or two of those other groups are inducted.

Posted by Roy on Monday, 11/12/2018 @ 09:05am

On the chance of Rufus/Chaka Khan getting elected this year would be if Stevie N. or Janet Jackson not getting selected, which would possibly open up a slot for them. I feel they are well deserving as a very creative and talented R&B, Funk band. What I am not sure of is whether Chaka Khan's solo work hurts or helps their chances. It seems her best work was with Rufus, but her more popular material was probably her solo efforts. Being that Rufus is on the bill, does that mean her solo work will not be considered? Chaka Khan deserves to be inducted, maybe even more so than Janet or Stevie(solo), but not without Rufus, IMO. This seems to be a bit of a dilemma. On Kool and the Gang and the Commodores, both are well deserving and should be nominated and voted in ASAP, having careers spanning R&B, Funk, Contemporary pop, with numerous hits. I also liked the Ohio Players quite a bit, as they were super talented with a few hits, but had a shortened career which hurt their chances for HOF consideration.

Posted by Will N. on Monday, 11/12/2018 @ 11:53am

Timeline wise, it wouldn't make sense for Janet to be inducted before Chaka. But other than that, Janet is the biggest R&B/urban name on the list. That's a barrier Rufus and Chaka won't be able to break while Janet is nominated. That's just a fact. I wish all three (Chaka, Janet and Stevie N) could get inducted together but it's not to be. Chaka will not be selected this year. I do think her solo career hampers Rufus' chances.

This is Rufus fourth nomination, and for the first time the Rock Hall has left off David Wolinski as a nominee with Rufus for some reason, which brings their nominated members down from 10 to 9. David Wolinski wrote Street Player with Chicago's drummer, Danny Seraphine. Rufus recorded it first, then Chicago covered it.

I want to know why David Wolinski was left off this year?

Rufus featuring Chaka Khan - should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of fame period. If you listen to all of their albums - you can hear how the band matured with each album. Also you can hear how Chaka's vocals just amazed us all with each and every album release. Please listen to "Egyptian Song" - off of the "Ask Rufus" album. This has got to be one of the best female vocal performances I've ever heard. Wow the sure power of her voice and how she was able to control her notes - my God you know Chaka has been kissed by God!!!!

The three previous times Rufus/Chaka Khan was nominated for the Rock Hall, David Wolinski was listed as a nominated member. This year he isn't. Is this a copy/paste error? Please correct it. Here is your Rufus/Chaka Khan page:

I think Rufus and Chaka Khan or Chaka Khan as a solo artist will make it to the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame at some point. She was nominated a bunch of times.
