I prefer INXS over R.E.M.

I've been a big R.E.M.fan from the very beginning. Cryptic lyrics from Michael Stipe and jangly, subtle guitar riffs from Peter Buck. Their sound got rather watered down in later years but they still produced an impressive body of work that spanned approximately 30 years. Unlike U2 they knew when to stop.

Rest in Peace Bill Rieflin (touring member with R.E.M. and Nine Inch Nails; not inducted into the R&R HoF with either band), 1960-2020.

REM and INXS have next to nothing in common musically and REM are way more important.

I doubt the intelligence of anyone claiming to prefer INXS over R.E.M. INXS was a decent pop/rock band who made commercial music for easy listening radio play. R.E.M. was so much more than that. OK there may not have been highly polished guitar solos and a sexy, rockstar lead singer (although some would say Stipe fits that bill), but they had substance, intellect, strong melodies and in the same vein as The Beatles, Bowie, Dylan etc. they evolved with pretty much every album they made. INXS basically made the same album over and over again.

I was about to post an obituary when I noticed a Wikipedia entry for Peter Buck. Until I learned that the R.E.M.'s member was alive and well; the Peter Buck that had passed was the co-founder of the Subway restaurant chain.

To the above poster, Peter Buck from R.E.M. is indeed still alive, celebrated his 65 birthday a few weeks ago and is no doubt still rocking.
