2013 Kennedy Center Honoree!!! Very deserving.

Trying to think of those RRHOFers who have also received this award. Let's see, Fats Domino, Paul McCartney, and of course, Chuck Berry.....

If anyone on here has Netflix, I highly recommend the rockumentary "Hired Gun". This focuses on the very talented musicians that are responsible for the sound accompanying the bands/artists in several classic songs. Their names may not be on the album cover, but they have helped contribute enormously to the artist(s) on tour and in the studio. These are people who usually go from band to band. Several well-known artists like Alice Cooper, Rob Zombie and Pink are interviewed, and they speak about how important those people are.

(spoiler alert...)

So what does this have to do with Billy Joel? Well, this is the first film/TV piece that has ever portrayed the man in a bad light. No joke. Mr. Joel usually comes off as a cool, calm, funny, nice man in interviews as well as the public eye. But not in this film. It pretty much talks about Joel's relationship with the men who helped him achieve international stardom from his "Stranger" days to "The Bridge": Russell Javors, Liberty Devitto and Doug Stegmeyer. These are the guys who have appeared in many publicity shots, as well as the back of the "The Stranger" album. These men enjoyed their time playing with Billy, while not in the spotlight. However, Billy felt he had to ditch them and get a new band for different reasons. Its an interesting story while at the same time, heartbreaking, as the film exposes the ugliness of the music/concert industry. Give it a watch!

Billy Joel has always been one of my favorite singer/songwriters. Cutting, bombastic lyrics paired with memorable melodies was always his hallmark. Another name that springs to mind in this vein is Randy Newman. Another favorite of mine.
